Jock, how did I do ?

I knew when I saw the 10 Beers screen name fun was on it's way!

As to the photograph and the model, well you already know this, but you got skills.  Not everyone can ask a prefect stranger of the opposite sex to pose for them.  Not to mention respond when they say no or where is this going?

Prefect!

I am looking forward to more!

As for the area you are heading we were there last year but not for that event.  I understand it is wild!  Give 'em #ell 10 Beers and enjoy the journey.  Keep us posted.

Hope you can make it to Carmel.  I am heading West tomorrow...

Hi All:

7 hours till wake up.

0400 SP - Tank to tank from San Antonio through to Clovis.  Meeting my brother for lunch and then on to Red River.

I'll blast a text out to "Beers" and "Fresh Oil" once we get to our room and settled for the night.

Only plans for Friday are a day ride (either loop or out and back) then Festivities!    :jester:

Ride Safe!

Post 21, I am on hwy 191 just north of Chilton, az. Above the Hugh azz mine.

Well folks, my end of this thread has been cancelled. I spoke to Cobb last night and there is a big storm almost all the way for him. He said he would not mind that so much but it's going to rain all the time we are there. So I had a good time while it lasted. I told Mark, I was looking forward to meeting him. So I'll go home, I wanted to go to Colorado on the way home, but I think I will just jam home instead.
Have fun

Maybe a dumb idea but I'd be interested in the miles between your stops.
150 - 200 miles

Made it back safe and sound.

List of things NOT done:

  • Did NOT stay dry !
  • Did NOT hit giant boulders in roadway
  • Did NOT hit enormous deer near Angel Fire
  • Did NOT hit elk near Eagle Nest
  • Did NOT do a loop (weather too dicey)
  • Did NOT hang around Red River - Split for Colorado and dodged thunderstorms all weekend

Still better than work!   :P

Hi All:

Got sick on the way home from Red River, had to catch up on my honeydos, and I tried this before, but was disconnected...  So here goes again.

Rode out from San Antonio on the Thursday the 22nd.  (Holy cow, has it been nearly a month already?).  Day started out pretty good, but after meeting Bro in  Clovis, we dodged some pretty severe thunderstorms.  (I REALLY love the weather / SAT on the NAV system).

We holed up in Las Vegas, NM for a few hours before heading out in the drizzle for RR.  Cruddy weather and a missed turn  :-[ by me and we got pretty far behind schedule.  Going by memory, I took 442 instead of 434 out of Mora.  They hook up via 122, but 122 turns to dirt.  Sooooo, back we go.

Finally found (the not very well-marked) turn off to 434 and headed out again - in the dark by this time.  All looked well for a few minutes, as the rain stopped.  I said a few minutes.  By the time we made it to the park it was drizzling again.  The road through the park loses its center stripe and becomes quite steep and curvy.  I imagine that would be a great ride on a Sunday afternoon.  9 o'clock at night in the rain, not so much.  There were several places where large (sometimes basketball size) rocks fell onto the road.  Slow and easy was the way here, to be sure!

Made it to the 434 / 120 junction and stopped for a break.  The stars came out and the roads dried up pretty quick.  After starting out again, it wasn't  mile or two before Angel Fire where a rather large buck decided he wanted to go for a stroll down the highway.  Did I say just how much I love the Daymaker lights?   :P

Then, a bit further down after turning onto 38 past Eagle Nest I met an elk.  Reflex-linked and Anti-lock brakes - worth every penny!  New underwear - priceless.   ;D  I saw her and was slowing down, but my brother still thinks I have the reflexes of a ninja.  Either way, keeping my wits about me and my eyes peeled allowed me to avoid a disaster.

The rest of the trip was spent dodging rocks (at a very cautious pace) all the way to Red River.  We rolled in around 11.

The Best Western staff had my key waiting and after unpacking I sat down and talked with Jim (Beam) for a while.  I cannot say enough about the staff at the Red River Best Western.  They are super!  Also, they have fairly recently renovated the place.  Nice rooms, new deck, you name it.

The next morning, we woke to this just outside our room.

I really wanted to take advantage of the fire pit and socialize, but the weather gods had other plans.  We relegated ourselves to the porch.  The rain, while it didn't cast too much of  pall over things, it wasn't the raucous atmosphere I was hoping for, either.

Here is a pic of the porch (which for your reference has two gas grills for guest use).  There is a grocery 50 metres away which had some pretty fine steaks and sweet corn! - not to mention some pretty good beers.

A shot of the main drag.  Still early on Friday (and looking South away from the vendors, etc.), and a lot of folks came in later.

It was beautiful for a while, but like I said before we got showers and after the ride in, we weren't up for a ride.  :(

We rode out of RR Saturday morning, early and went to Ignacio, CO.

We took 64 out of Taos and picked-up 64/84 through Chama out towards Aztec.  If you are out this way, you must do this ride.  Spectacular ride through the valley and over the pass.  Sorry, I ride more than I take pictures, but I am definitely getting a GoPro for just this reason.  With all the rain, it was green, lush., and just beautiful.

We cut-off on 539 by the reservoir to get up to Ignacio.  It starts off pretty rough (a mile or two), but really opens up after crossing the dam.  The Casino in Ignacio is pretty nice.  One thing I liked was the $3 minimum.  Last time (and last time ever) I went to Louisiana, table games were $10 at the casinos.  Yeah, I know I ride a CVO, but for Pete's sake, Vegas is better than that!

Anyhow, I give the Casino  4/5.

We decided to leave out Sunday morning for Pueblo and just do day rides instead of heading up north.  We had some interesting weather:  rain, hail, sleet and snow!  I kid you not.  Rain and sleet going up Wolf Creek Pass, snowing at the summit , and a brief hail storm just before South Fork.

This last picture is on Hwy 9 just north of Guffey, CO looking toward Hartsel and South Park

We really had some great days riding together.  The trip back was straight through for me without incident and actually pretty pleasant temps.

Well, if you've read this far thanks! and ride safe.

P.S.  A buddy of mine has a spare room in a cabin in Spearfish so I'm going to Sturgis!

Cheers!   :drink:
