This past weekend, we went to The Earl Warren Showgrounds Arena for the only pro bull riding event in Santa Barbara County. This was a great opportunity for rodeo fans of all ages to witness some great riders. Every seat is up close and personal as you'll see from the pictures below.

Rodeo is a competitive sport which arose out of the working practices of cattle herding in Spain, Mexico, and later the United States, Canada, South America and Australia. It was based on the skills required of the working vaqueros and later, cowboys, in what today is the western United States, western Canada, and northern Mexico. Today, it is a sporting event with events that involve horses and livestock, testing the skill and speed of the cowboy / cowgirl athletes. Rodeos generally comprise the following events: Calf Roping, Team Roping (Headers & Healers), Steer Wrestling, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bareback Bronc Riding, Bull Riding (The Crazys) and Barrel racing. The events are divided into two basic categories: the rough stock events and the timed events.

Earl Warren (1891 – 1974) was the 14th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court and one of only two people to be elected Governor of California three times.

My favorite. Team Roping (Headers & Healers) is the only rodeo event where men and women riders compete together. Two people capture and restrain a full-grown steer. One horse and rider, the "header," lassos a running steer's horns, while the other horse and rider, the "heeler," lassos the steer's two hind legs. Once the animal is captured, the riders face each other and lightly pull the steer between them, so that it loses its balance and lies down. This technique originated from methods of capture and restraint for treatment used on a ranch.

And now for the really brave... or crazy! Bull riding - an event where the cowboys ride full-grown bulls instead of horses. Although skills and equipment similar to those needed for bareback bronc riding are required, the event differs considerably from horse riding competition due to the danger involved. Because bulls are unpredictable and may attack a fallen rider, rodeo clowns, now known as "bullfighters", work during bull-riding competition to distract the bulls and help prevent injury to competitors.

Stopped and took in the sights in Santa Barbara on the way home. Since is was Fiesta Weekend I thought it would be wild but it was not. So, we walked out on the pier and saw riders of a different type. How's this for balance?

Very nice pictures. My neighbor has a bunch of rodeo bulls( I live deep in the country). Those bulls stare at me when I go by like they want to just rip your head off. They just look mean standing around.
