Mike, do you know if the new radios have to be programmed/mated to a bike before they'll work in a retrofit? Or will they work new right out of the box.
Back a hundred years ago when we first started trying to swap HK radios in to the 05 and older bikes everyone said they'd not work. Used ones would though (with tinkering for the AVC). New ones would too; if you mated them to any bike first. Just curious if it's known if the new radios are similar or if they will work right out of the box.

I called them today, the young lady I spoke to was very helpful. She said a new radio would have to be zoned at purchase, and explained to me and it lets the radio to know where it is in the country. She also said if it’s flashed for a whim module that will allow Apple CarPlay to work but you don’t need the actual module

I have my new GTS radio and the SC-GTSi interface. I'm waiting for the new XM radio that will be here tomorrow and will install it on Tuesday. Have an appointment with the local dealer to have the radio initialized on Wed. Keeping my fingers crossed and will post results here. I will have pix to share also. Here are the instructions. I hope the unit is better than the instructions are. Not very impressed with them.
Feb 26, I have the new radio, XM module and SC-GTSi installed. It took me about 2 hours and I am particular to torque screws to spec. It went pretty well except that they expect you to install the adapter where the CB radio goes. That won't work. However, it will install on the other side between the radio and the media pocket. The cable takes up a lot of room and should probably be shorter. I did manage to get it all stuffed in behind the fairing. I also have a WHIM installed that takes up space where the CB is located. So if you are the proud owner of a CVO Limited you will have to face that challenge. I have pictures but I'm not sure how I can share them because they are quite large and there are about a dozen or so. Not sure that the pictures will be of any help either. It powers up and I was able to pair my phone and my wife's phone with no trouble. I go to the dealer tomorrow (2-27) to have the unit flashed to make it all play. I will post again when that is complete. Keeping fingers crossed.
Update:
2/27 - Had radio flashed by my dealer and everything seems to work except CB. It is grayed out in the menu. There is a bug with the system such that the radio displays the message "! This radio is not compatible with this vehicle. Please contact your Harley-Davidson dealership". Message goes away by turning off the radio for a minute and turning it back on. Soundz is aware and working on a fix. So far, I'm delighted. This new radio is incredibly better than that old piece of crap that I have dealt with for five and a half years.
If you need pictures, I will try to figure out a way of presenting them but I really don't think they would be of much help.
Carry on.

What did you have to do to get the radio from Harley? Our dealer is saying they can’t get one without a 2019 vin# and they program it first for the bike.
-
That is BS. no VIN required. Dealer does have to initialize it. They have to do that with every new bike they get. This is no different.
-
Great! I’m looking forward hearing how it works after it’s configured 👍

Me too!

Your dealer doesn't want to sell parts very bad. Or the parts counter is too lazy to actually look it up and, instead, they're just saying something that makes it easy for them. You can find it (and order) at the Harley website if your dealer really doesn't want to take your money. Part number 76000834 for almost $1900 (gulp).

You boys are brave. Spending over $2K to have a faster boot up for navigation and no rubber buttons and (finally, 10 years late) Bluetooth compatibility directly with the unit without having to spend an additional $500 to HD for a module.
I trust Pete's set up far more than HD's ability to allow you to swap out head units. Sounds like an electrical nightmare to me. I guess this form and new topics on issues with swapped units will tell the truth.
Good luck and send me any other money you feel like parting with. Lol
-
Expensive, no doubt but the new GTS unit is like chalk and cheese when compared to the old Boom.
Being faster is only one of the benefits.
It's just way better all round, everything has been improved, most importantly in my opinion the Sat Nav which is excellent.
I'm not certain there are any better aftermarket units out there at the moment.
Just my opinion though!!

You still have to use the WHIM with the GTS.

Damn! It must cost a lot extra to build a radio that can play on the other side of the road ??? .
-
I see what you did there. Lol

What is WHIM?

What is WHIM?
Wireless Headset Interface Module

Wireless Headset Interface Module
thank you. Is this necessary?

In the every other vehicle world ...No. in the forever complicated and restrictive HD world...of course. $40K on a pleasure vehicle you need a module. On a $18K Hyundai, nope
-
thank you. Is this necessary?
to get apple car play to work, from what i understand.
-
I spoke to people at Soundz, I was told that you can flash for the WHIM module; but you don’t need to install a WHIM module to make it work. I hope that makes sense.

If you have any questions, call Soundz, Pete may just be there, If ot, his stall is almost as knowledgeable as he is. I am almost considering buying his EQ module. $500 is steep, but it would be nice to adjust sound coming out of HD amps
-
thank you. Is this necessary?
Yes if you want to talk on the phone, or give voice commands to GPS.
That said, it is Standard equipment on then 18 and 19 CVO Touring bikes.

Is Pete working on a fix for the CB issue as well? I need that CB to work too!
-
Yes. They are aware and expect a fix soon. Not a huge problem as it only happens occasionally. Installation went quite well and EVERYTHING is working. I'm impressed.
-
You don't have to use WHIM if you have a wired headset. Apple Car Play will not work without one or the other.

For those that really want it, New Castle Harley has it for $1609..still big $$$

I'm looking at a 2015 CVO RGU and am wondering if this is something I should ask the dealer to do before I buy the bike? Since I have no experiance with the GT or GTS I'm curious if it would be something to have added to the bike?
-
Hi
good luck, dealers will tell u it can't be done im sure because its not a dealer part the harness. A lot of them don't like to think outside of the box and don't like to tackle projects like that
Let us know

After riding through Indiana and Michigan today trying to use the navigation..... The 18 version sucks, garbage, will get replaced. My phone was far more useful and faster.
-
I always use my phone just use the bike nav to see the big map. I use the Sena headset bluetooth to my phone.

2017 CVO Limited with WHIM. Bought radio fro Utah guy, fits perfect, has to be flashed by dealer Works Great!
-
DONE. This entire process took me about 5 weeks or so start to finish. I bought a brand new GTS Radio on Ebay for $1471 with shipping. You need the new Sirius XM module for the GTS Radio. The XM Module from the 6.5 will not work in the newer GTS Radio. I bought that too. I also bought the integration module from SOUNDZ for $450. All this was not cheap.......but MUCH less than a new bike. My 2016 Road Glide CVO now has the new and fully functional GTS Radio. I am thrilled to death!!!!! If you have the skills to take the outer fairing off you have the skill to replace the radio. It was quite easy. You do have to have HD flash the bike for you. My dealer flashed it wrong the first time......I took it back for the correct flash and everything is perfect. I could not be happier. Also just as a note......there is a gentleman on this thread from AZ that was very supportive of this effort and I thank him sincerely. If you want the GTS Radio and you are willing to spend the money.......DO IT. You will be very happy. Thank you. Rick
-
Also.....I have the WHIM........but you do NOT have to have it as I understand. The SOUNDZ adapter / module looks exactly like the picture at the start of this thread. I use an Android phone.......but......I use my old iphone 5 for tunes......i plug it in via the glovebox on the right and it is useful for the Apple car play functions even without phone service.

I had the new radio installed and i did not need a new XM Module. The one i had works fine.

I put the new GTS Boom head unit in my 15 SG with the SOUNDZ module and have only used the HD nav for the low fuel feature and finding a gas station. I pretty much either use Apple maps with the CarPlay feature or listen to the music also via CarPlay (either thru the WHIM and my helmet or thru the bike's stereo speakers).
I have used Siri via the helmet getting directions or finding places with no problem. Now if only i could get my 15 Street Glide to run as good as a M8 lol.

What was needed to change the heads units?? I have a 2018 and my 6.5 head unit is having issues, I was hoping the units would switch out seemlessly, because I believe the new units are better for glare on the Road Glides.
Thanks for any information.
