Renting '15 Ultra: Infotainment Question
« on: June 24, 2015, 08:01:19 PM »

I'm flying to South Dakota on Sat. and renting a '15 Ultra Classic.  My question concerns the infotainment system.  If I plug my phone to the USB tether in the fairing, is it going to charge the phone as well as connect the phone to the infotainment system?

Yes to both, however, you'll get better performance if you bluetooth your phone to the system. Easier to control songs and such from your hand controls that way if you have music on your phone.

I will be renting a 15 Limited next month and I am wondering will an Ipod classic work in the new infotainment system?

I was thinking of taking it along and just plugging into the USB cable but not sure that old of technology will work.

Thanks for the help!

Don't really need a full player.  I just use a 16gb flash drive with the mp3's on it and works great.  Have several hundred song files in subdirectories by artist.  Even displays the music covers on the display screen.  Sorry, dont know about the old Ipod.

TNcarter thanks for the information!

I hadn't thought about that avenue. I already have music ready to go since I use an 8gb in my truck for music.

I just have to remember to grab the thing before I jump on that plane!

whether or not the ipod classic will work, I wouldn't use it.  being hard disk based, they are not best suited for all the vibrations that they would be subjected to.  could end up killing it.

I've heard reports of people using them with no issues, and then also reports of people killing them the first time they tried to use them on a bike.  I wouldn't chance it.  a thumb drive is cheap.  even if you don't have one, you can always stop by best buy or office depot and pick one up.  i'd rather spend $10 than chance killing my old ipod.

FWIW, I rented a 15 Street Glide in Vegas last month and I had all sorts of issues with the older Ipod Nano I had. I brought the right large pin connector that fit the Nano with the USB on the other side. We sat in front of the deal for 30 minutes watching the service guy try to get it to work, and he finally gave up. He told me the only ones that worked has the small connectors.  So for the first day I didn't bother. But that night I gave it another whirl, by connecting it with the ignition OFF then turning it on, and it worked perfectly. All of the handle controls worked. I will say controlling an Ipod with that system quite wonky, but works.  So my point is, whenever connecting ALWAYS have the bike OFF.

I plug my iPhone into the usb.  I use the USB connection for my music, but blue tooth the phone for calls.  Keeps it charged.  Works flawless.
