Question on catless pipe
« on: March 29, 2015, 09:33:08 PM »

Quick question...just traded my 2013 CVO ultra for 2015 CVO limited ...can you use catless exhaust pipes on the 2015 without any program change/ tuner like you could on the 2013? Thanks for your time.

2015 the cat is in the head pipe, changing it out will require a tune. Result will be better running motor, less heat.

Obviously you can do whatever you want, but the bike will run better if it's tuned properly.  After spending $40k on a motorcycle, spending another 2% on making it run up to it's full potential shouldn't be a big deal but it sure seems to be a big deal based on all the questions like yours that get posted around here all the time.  Why all the aversion to having the bike tuned?

Great question....the answer is most Harley dealers will tune a bike whether they know how to or not.

The best bet is to research before drinking the HD dealer coolaid and have it tuned by a reputable, responsible and experienced person.  That may well be your local dealer but odds are it ain't.  There are some great threads here on the site on good and bad tuners/experiences.  You may have to travel a bit to get the bike tuned properly but as Jerry stated, it's a drop in the bucket to get it running correctly.  Think of the tune expense as that chrome accessory that just doesn't show.... ;D

You can but do you really want to?   :nixweiss:

I removed the cat from my '12 SESG header and while I was waiting for the tune (about 2 weeks) it ran but wasn't something I would "settle" for without a tune.  The factory ECM will compensate for some minor changes like changing the mufflers.  Changing the header to a freer flowing unit (no cat) is not a minor change, it's a major one.  Get the tune from a reputable tuner and it will make all the difference.

No, but you don't need to use a Harley dealer.  There are real full time professionals who can do a very good tune, but it might be hard for some to find one within a reasonable distance.  For those people there is another approach that may not be as ideal, but would still be much better than running with the stock calibration.  The canned maps supplied by some folks, like Fullsac for instance, have received lots of positive reviews.

Thanks for all the replies ... That said, I'm not afraid of spending for a tuner, but on the 2013 I put catless pipe on with xieds and bike ran fine...no popping on decel, performance ok, gas mileage normal, etc . This was done to reduce the heat and a little louder exhaust. I liked that set up and was just wondering if it could be done on the 2015. I realize that with a tuner you can be spot on for the performance part, but I don't ride it to race it, just tour in confort with it. Again, thanks for your imput.

A good tune is about much more than maximum torque and horsepower.  To me, the most important part is the tuning at part throttle that makes for much smoother operation in everyday riding.  But like I said originally, it's your bike and your decision.  Enjoy the new bike.

You said you had nothing at all on the old bike....but putting the Xieds on it did make it run richer so you were compensating for the catless pipe. Still not as good as a real tune, but at least you richened the mixture.

I never tried to ride mine DX pipe and 2.0 baffles without the TTS/map installed. Would it run without popping and causing problems? I just assumed you've got to do it or it wont even run correctly.
