clutch squawk
« on: February 20, 2015, 01:42:55 PM »

2012 cvo skunk . just replaced stock clutch kit with S.E. 37980-10. also have Barnett low profile lock-up pressure plate conversion kit. the stock clutch never made noise although it was discolored.Using redline primary lube and have always used it.  the clutch will squawk loudly taking off from stop hot or cold. it doesn't do it every time but it isn't right. i have the same springs as  i ran with stock harley clutch also. it doesn't slip at speed.

Did you soak the fibers before install? Did you replace the clutch bearing? Stock basket? If you did replace the bearing did you make sure not to side load the clutch bearing? Pressing the outer race to press it into the basket and support the inner race to press the hub in is how it should be done. I've had a handful of customers that have side loaded the bearings not knowing they shouldn't do that and in some cases it can crack the plastic cage and ruin the bearing. Can you duplicate the squeal while in neutral with the clutch lever pulled in? What about clutch lever out still in neutral? Bike running in both scenarios obviously.

how much oil did you use for the refill? MW states in the instructions to only refill with 14 oz. thats how much i refilled with when new, comp was replaced at same time got about 12k miles out of that  comp. never had any clutch issues, now it has about 32 oz. oil...no comp. noise just this squawk noise when taking off hard, hmmm how dose one get every thing under that one cover to play well together :nixweiss:

If you only filled with one quart after taking the primary cover off, you are way too low, to be sure, 13 fl. oz. too low. You need to put in 45 fl oz. My experience after putting the proper amount in, whether it's a dry fill or wet fill, the primary adjuster chain shoe will barely be covered with fluid. You can see that with a flashlight looking in the cover.

Have had that noise before with Kevlar plates. Doesn't seem to do any damage.

I gave had that issue since I put in the 120r. Exactly as been described and has always drove me crazy. I always used the same tech and he would always say he couldnt replicate which I understood as it is very intermittent and has never effected performance. My tech left a couple of months ago so I got a new tech that told me the squawk was the oil I was using being a bit thick and with the stronger motor sometimes when taking off it was the plates not being completely immersed in oil. He changed to a thinner primary (cant remember which one) and I haven't heard a peep since. Its been almost 5000 miles and I am very glad to to hear it anymore.

I have the same issue after replacing the OEM clutch with the beefier Screamin Eagle version.  Quite a squawk and a jump as mine seems to slip or jump and is dangerous from a hard take off.  Only does it when it appears to be cold, however.  Using Amzoil 20-50 synthetic.  As others, told by Harley they couldn't duplicate the issue.  Have 45k and for about 10 k have had the issue.  Been to several dealers, as well.  About the give up but love the bike.  Had it since new.  Anniversary edition and a collector.  Just hate to have this issue as will likely keep as long as I can ride.
