RG Ultra recall or not?
« on: April 27, 2015, 07:49:52 AM »

I see just about every bike there is on the new recall list for the brake cylinder except the CVO Road Glide Ultra. Why would our brake fluid be any different than the others?

Thought it was a clutch recall, not brakes, or are there two? I checked my 2014RK, and my VIN is not on the recall, lots are, so not sure what is different

I assume you have a chromed master cylinder.  The latest recall seems to be aimed at the black painted parts, not the chromed parts.  What the finish has to do with the problem remains a mystery; I'm not totally convinced the folks at Harley have nailed down the root cause yet, since this is their third attempt to fix a clutch master cylinder problem that began in 2014 models.  Regardless, check your VIN against the Harley website or the government website to see if your bike is included.

FYI, My wifes 2014 CVO Deluxe was in this latest clutch recall. (Chrome)   And my '15 CVO RGU was not, also chrome....  Guess it has more to do with when they were built...

I thought that was the case, but then I read a blurb they put out that someone posted recently claiming it was the black master cylinders. :confused5:  There is still a lot of flaky information floating around, and I'm not convinced H-D really knows what they're doing.  So far we are most of the way through the second model year for clutch master cylinder problems, so I wonder if they'll get it right for 2016?

If you have registered your bike with the Harley Davidson website, you can go here to check your specific VIN number:  Safety Recall Information | Harley-Davidson USA.

You can also check your Vin with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Motorcycle USA:

The Street 500/750 recall is the result of an oversight at the Kansas City plant, according to the Non-Compliance Notice provided by the NHTSA. Without the rear reflector installed, the vehicle does not meet the requirements of FMVSS108.
The other, larger recall is the result of a “chemical reaction inside the sealed clutch system (which) creates gas bubbles which may cause loss of clutch lift,” according to the Defect Notice submitted to the NHTSA on April 9, 2015.

Harley has been investigating the issue since October 2014, prompted by eight warranty claims and two customer complains potentially related to the issue. By March 2015, the company had identified 313 warranty claims, 31 customer complaints and 27 incidents/crashes that were potentially related to the issue.

Affected models are equipped with master cylinder part numbers 36700056 and 36700049. If the conditions is present, the Defect Notice goes on to explain, “the customer may notice a large amount of “free play” in the clutch lever when they first squeeze the clutch after being parked for an extended period of time.”

Owners with affected Touring models will need to arrange service with an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer. If the defect is present, the dealer will flush the clutch system and rebuild the clutch master cylinder using a recall kit, free of charge.
Owners affected by either recall can call Harley-Davidson’s customer service line at 1-800.258-2464 for more information. The Street 500/750 recall ID is 0620. The Touring model recall ID is 0165.

Owners may also go to www.safercar.gov or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.

This is the post I mentioned previously that claimed chrome or service part master cylinders were not included in this latest recall.  It would be nice if H-D would officially release the real details and chronology of what has occurred over the past couple years, but I won't hold my breath.

I'm guessing the 2014 Deluxe was part of the previous recall, not this one.  When you have three recalls in rapid succession for the same system, you need a scorecard to keep up.

This is all strange to me.  Hydraulic clutch and master cylinder is nothing new to Harley.  My 09 CVO had it, my 12 CVO had it, my 13 CVO has it and My 15.  What on the master cylinder changed between 13 and 14?

My just received RGU is not on the list yet.  Do not know if that is because of build date or the chrome.  Not had any issues with function.
