2009 Ultra CVO Road Tech GPS Replacement
« on: June 20, 2015, 09:54:45 AM »

I just purchased a 2009 Ultra that had a factory gps but the gps was stolen from the previous owner and he never replaced it.
My questions is can I buy a regular garmin 660lm and have all the functionality, ie....  a direct replacement for the stolen unit or do I have to buy another gps thru Harley to get the functionality ie the road tech version.

thanks.

I thought only the MoCo branded Garmin's were compatible to/with the NIMS? :nixweiss:

May not, all I cared about was a motorcycle GPS and it was a price hard to turn down. I do not know what NIMS does for it. I Googled it and it seems as many say is the same as say its different so I have no clue.  :nixweiss:

There is a difference between the Harley branded Zumo 660 or 665 and the non Harley branded Zumo 660 and 665.

Since you do not have a CVO you may or may not have the Harley Navigation Interface Module (NIM). You can find more information about what the NIM does at www.hdbomm.com.

If you currently have a plug in your Auxiliary Input port on the front of your radio then you are ready to go and you can use the Harley branded Road Tech or the Zumo series.

If your confused about the NIM and have questions you can give me a call and I will explain your options.

Regardless of Google, it is NOT the same. The NIM will NOT function on a Garmin branded 660 or 665, it requires the Road Tech brand to work. The HD units also have the dealer database installed and a icon on the menu for them. It also has a longer warranty (or did back in 2010 when I bought mine).
Also if you watch ebay the Road Tech is more valuable at sale time than the Garming unit. I put my four year old Road Tech on ebay last year with a $500 by-it-now and it sold first hour.

After looking at Jim's site I do see there is a difference.  In my case I was not interested in anything other than how to get from point A to B and doing away with the crappy built in Nav unit on my bike.   My goal was achieved at a reasonable cost and I get free map updates as well.  Others may prefer all the bells and whistles so they should go the RoadTech route.
