2015 street glide R.shock eye to eye with shocks removed
« on: May 17, 2015, 08:53:06 PM »

Does anyone know what eye to eye measurement is on the rear shock mounts with shocks removed and tire touching fender?

Should be 12 or 13 inches extended. Shouldn't compress enough to touch fender.

garya1, I don't know the answer to your question, but I am intrigued by it.  What exactly are you trying to do?

Jerry

My friend is getting a new 2015 street glide, he is vertically challenged and wants low seat height of the street glide but he also wants better suspension than stock. Therefore, knowing the bolt to bolt distance when the tire bottoms out will tell me how much maximum travel the street glide can have on the rear.

Example, if the eye to eye distance at bottom out is 9 inches, then allowing for 1/4 inch clearance of tire to fender, the maximum travel for a 12 inch shock will be 2 3/4 inches. etc.

Was Just trying to pre-order some shocks. Looks like we will have to await delivery.

The friend maybe should look at a different seat. He could gain some reach easier that way and not upset the dynamics of the suspension.

Thanks for the seat idea!

As for the "dynamics" of the suspension, if we can add stroke, this will improve, not harm the dynamics of the suspension. 2 inches of rear wheel travel does not make for a very nice ride down the road, 2.5 is an improvement of 25% if it is possible.

We have had the street glide seat modified for my wife.  It was lowered 3/4 of an inch, but it was also narrowed a lot in the nose of the seat, about 1.5 inches, which keeps the legs closer together which gives more length to the legs.

This is far superior to lowering the bike for safety if your ride the curves at all fast.  The 12 inch rear shocks on the CVO Street Glides, CVO Road Glide custom, and CVO King already are an inch lower than the original design.  With these 12 shocks my wife on her bike and I on my CVO King have dragged the floorboards more than once.  I have to remember when I get on the King I can't lean as much as my Ultra with 13 shocks.  Actually thinking of going to 13 on the King.

If what you seek to do is just find a same length shock that has more travel, that's probably but not necessarily true, depending on how well the shock is made and if it is designed to handle the forces involved with a 900 pound bike.  Look through the spec pages at Progressive suspension for instance and you will find a large range of listed travel dimensions for their various 12" shocks, from less than 2" to over 3".  But as you increase the travel of a shock, you reduce the engagement and thus the lateral stiffness of the shock.  It's a trade-off.  Look at the shocks they recommend for a Touring model and many of those longer travel shocks drop off the list.

Thanks Jerry for the input. The shocks we have been looking at are Howard's Ohlin's 3-1 with comp & rebound adj. Built to his weight / ride style.

As always I value your opinion.
