Installing forth compensator
« on: June 12, 2015, 07:57:05 AM »

About to install forth compensator in my FLHTCUSE3 with 45,000 miles. The last one installed, and is in bike now, is the first kit with the glue in oiling tray, which had two shims that mounted between the shaft extension and the alternator rotor. The latest compensator kit part number 42200064A does not show these shims on the parts drawing and there are none in the kit. However, written instructions state "make sure shims do not fall between the shaft extension and alternator rotor when loosening screw to torque to 175lbs. Is this just an oversight in Harley updating instruction sheet? Confused. Thanks.

You need to look at the slider cam that came with the new kit.  If it has a groove in it, that means it is the new design which has material added to eliminate the need for those shims.  Read the attached bulletin M1352 for the details.

Curious if you are staying with the Harley POS or if you are going to try the new Baker comp.

Curious to why after 3 failed HD units, you would go with another one? Isnt that the textbook definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results!
Unless HD is doing these under warranty, but even me I would say enough and look into baker.

Yup.  Either that, or maybe it was a baker's dozen?  Whatever, H-D and their stockholders are thankful for all the extra profits.  Ya'll come back now, hear?

Love the improvements every time I need another one. I will keep trying until they get it right. Don't like aftermarket parts.

D@D cycle in my area has been installing the Baker Units in Trikes with outstanding results, so far so good time will tell.

Yes indeed.  People need to temper their enthusiasm and praise until we see long term results.  Even Harley's sad offering lasted as long as this Baker product has been in use (less than a month).  Let's see how it does after a large number of users rack up 15k or more miles.  I certainly hope this is the answer.  If it is, it's another sad commentary on H-D's lack of ability to design and produce a good product and stand behind it.  Maybe they should hire some of these aftermarket guys as consulting engineers so they could design stuff that actually works right the first time, as opposed to the fifth time and still counting with the H-D version.

I installed my 6th compensator this spring.  The first one went at 41,400 miles after that they went about every 10,000 miles per unit.  The last one was sent by mail free of charge as they were supposed to be guaranteed for one year.  As far as the other brand I'll give it some time.  Out of the last 6 I had to pay for 4, I also has to replace the clutch basket twice and other primary components.  This issue and a few others that Harley can't seem to get right is the main reason I have not purchased another Harley.  I get tempted now and then but I look at my old parts bin and quickly change my mind.
