Ride cut short
« on: June 19, 2015, 02:07:16 PM »

We're  in Laconia for bike week bad a buddy of mine had his drive belt break. Apparently a rock got sucked in between the belt and pulley. This is the second road trip this year that has been interrupted by a breakdown. My bike experienced a problem during our  trip to  Ribfest... It's  starting to look  like this riding season is going to be interesting if thus stuff keeps up, either that or Noone will ride with me due to some kind of bad mojo I got going on....

The broken belt required a 5 hour round trip ride to get a replacement part so we could give the part to Laconia  HD - they didn't have  it in stock -and have them change it. Not something  we can do on the side of the road...

Road 2.5 hours wearing the belt likely some kind of western bandit. Got a few funny looks and even one or two "I know what that is" looks.

I was surprised to find, the hard way, how few dealers stock a belt for an '08 Ultra.

This was even more fun to find...
1985 FXSB.......one dealer within 200 miles showed it in stock. A phone call to them to verify they had it and we were on our way.

don't know if the mothership sells a kit for other models but a google search will find you some other options.  I wouldn't ride cross country with it, but I think it would get you home.  It's been on my list to get one for mine and my wife's belt since hers broke the day before we left for the 105th in Milwaukee.  Our dealer got us fixed up so we were good to go, but what if it breaks while you're out and about like the OP.

Have only ever torn up one belt and that was from my own stupidity.   Went to the Hill Climbs in Oregonia Ohio a long time back and had to drive down a steep ditch to get into the grassy parking area.  Bike bottomed out but I powered through it.  Did not realize I had bent my pretty chrome belt guard straight up pointing at the center of the belt.  Did I mention they sell beer in gallon milk jugs at this event?

After the event was over everyone that got out on the streets and many/most were lit up so it was a burnout parade.  I thought hey I can do that and I did some tremendous burnouts, my Road King out did itself.  Unfortunately the belt guard cut my belt in half, some may say hey two belts are better than one but there not.  Was able to drive it home and to the dealer the next day.  Damage one belt one rear tire now bald and one destroyed chrome belt guard.  Burnouts Priceless. :huepfenlol2:

We will definitely be  adding one of these emergency belts to the saddle bags

That sucks. They had to order one for me for my 2012. Either they don't stock them or they sell a lot.

Not sure if my belt would have fit but I have a near new one from my 08 CVO Road King.  I never saw you but if I did I would have offered my lift, tools and what little knowledge I have from changing a few belts.  Oh I live about 40 minutes from the event.  Keep me in mind next year.  The kit looks like it may keep us going.  Has anyone ever used the kit or know anyone that has?
