Rough ride on 2013 Road King
« on: July 23, 2015, 08:50:39 PM »

Love my RK so far with the exception of the stiff ride. Even small bumps rattle the whole bike and it shoots right up my spine. The adjustment knob was turned all the way out to "low", so I turned it in about 3/4 of the way and it's closer to "high". Im not feeling a difference and out of principle Im not going to upgrade shocks after spending this much money. I'm also not going to keep the bike if I can't get the ride softer. Ive done research with no luck. Is there a trick or sweet spot for these shocks? I'm 5'8" 170lbs and ride solo.

Thanks!

Check tire pressures. My RK rides stiff when the tires are at max recommended pressure and the dealership loves pumping them up.

Even 1-2 pounds of pressure may make a difference. It is worth a try.

One more thing. The adjustment you were changing is usually set in accordance with weight of rider and other accessories, luggage, passenger. I am pretty sure my owners manual has the weight and number of turns it recommends at those weights. It helps to get you in the right neighborhood rather than guessing.

I know its not the tires because even when the bike is sitting and I saddle up, there is absolutely no give to the springs at all. My other bike, I can press on the seat with my hands and push it down some. Sadly I'm on vacation in Maggie Valley and didn't bring my manual. No luck finding one online.

Well darn. I would look it up in mine but my bike is at Harley with the owners manual in my saddle bag.

I found that proper adjustment for weight was critical in the quality of the ride.  Don't guesstimate calculate the weight, back off the knob all the way and then crank it to the exact weight.  It helped quite a bit on my 2013 cvo RK.  Good luck.
