Backfiring and rough idle
« on: July 27, 2015, 02:49:06 PM »

Hey everyone, I just bought a California model 06 CVO FLHTCUSE that has had the baffles punched. It has a rough idle and backfires when burping the throttle between gears. I put torque cones and 6" baffles in it but hasn't done much to stop the issues.

Does it have a tuner? If not, get one! Even with the stage 1 download from Harley my 2006 did the same things. You will be loving life once you have a tuner installed and properly dyno tuned.

You didn't give us much to go on, but there again since you bought it used you may not know the history of the bike either.

If the original owner just cut the baffles out and did nothing about the tuning, that right there will cause a problem.  The '06 and earlier bikes don't have closed loop engine management, so there is no automatic compensation to the air fuel ratio.  And those older bikes usually didn't run all that great even when fully stock, thanks to the stock tune Harley provided.  BUT, you can't just assume a tune is the only problem.  There are plenty of other things to consider, like intake air leaks, compression problems, ignition problems, etc..  In other words, some basic diagnostic work would be a good idea.

Thanks for the replies. I bought a pair of Vance & Hines slip on pipes yesterday and installed them. The backfiring stopped but still has a rough idle. I also ordered a Dynojet Power Vision for it.

You got the best color in the 2006 line up. Just a bitch to keep clean.

I installed the Power Vision and with a quick email, I was able to tune the bike so it's running great. Now to figure out why the XM says "power up failure". I knew I was getting the bike cheap, but dang it.
