Heat Demons?
« on: August 09, 2015, 08:37:03 PM »

Going to try once more....does anybody have any experience with using heat demons on a TBW bike??? The new versions says you don't have to ream the bar anymore. Thoughts...want to order soon.....

Thanks in advance!!

Here is an older post discussing them. Looks as though Jim at Metal Dragon is the go to guy on them.

MJ, I've put Heat Demons on 3 fly-by-wire bikes.  The heating units themselves worked fine on all three; as the Heat Demons nearly always seem to.  One bike required reaming.  Two did not.

I honestly never did any particular comparison of the units though.  Just chalked it up to good fortune on the two that didn't require the extra work.  That pair of bikes were the later two of the three I'd done though.  So I assumed Heat Demons has changed something specific to these bikes I never put in the time or effort to do the homework to find out what.  I was just pleased they went in without the extra effort.

Just an FYI..I called Avon and inquired about their heated grips (as the other post said) and I was told they are no longer using Heat Demons since they had a lot of trouble with them. Now I need to compare the Avons with the using the Heat Demons and the stock grips.

I installed them on my 2014 RK and took them off.

I did not like the heat element tape on the TBW sending unit.  That element had to get real hot to transfer the heat to the grip.

Also the left grip was always hotter.

I like them for non-TBW bikes.

I have also had good luck withHarley grips....heat up fast with plenty of heat.

Good Luck

Installed them on my 2014 RK with no issues other than wiring them into a circuit that the CANBUS didn't like and kept switching off. Wired them into the aux switch on the nacelle now and they are working great. No reaming required.

I don't like the controller on the Avon grips--just one temp.

Back to looking at the heat demons.

My experience with the Heat Demons, for what it's worth.  Had them on my 2007 RG and they worked great.  Got very hot; rarely had them higher than half way.  On my 2013 CVO RG, not so good.  For some reason the heat doesn't transfer to my grips very well from the bars.  The bar gets very hot, but with the grips installed, the grips only get warm.  Have tried three different sets of HD grips (including the stock), and none of them get hot.  Told the Heat Demon folks about my experience, but heard no response.

Have seen similar with different sets of grips.  The differences, at least for me, was the grips.  You're heating from the element, through the bars, then to and through the grips.  I had a set of SAC grips on a bike with Heat Demons and the grips pretty well negated the effect of the heaters.  Thick, soft surface with a porous interior.  So not a good conductor.  A different set of narrower and more solid grips on the same bike and the same elements transferred great heat.

I put Heat Demons on a '12 SG with stock grips.  Worked well, no gripes, no problems.  They didn't get as hot as the HD grips on my other bike, but that's just fine.  The HD heated grips get WAY too hot, and I've never gone above 2-3 on the settings.  I went with the Heat Demons mainly because I had read about so many failures with the HD warmers.
