Chain Tensioner
« on: August 09, 2015, 07:54:09 PM »

Received a call last night from my friend that bought my 2006 SE. He starts to explain to me while driving home from work and in 3rd gear the bike jerks and slows down for a second then is good to go.  Other than he tells me ist thru 4th gear whine now but 5th does not. Now we are about 60 miles from each other and I'm thinking damn maybe a bearing is going out in the tranny. I advised him to drain the oil in the transmission and let me know what he finds on the magnet. Nothing, clean as a whistle but the redline is a milky pink like condensation formed in it. He re fills the transmission and goes for a ride around the block, sounds good for a short time then it won't shift at all.   I called him this morning and he said im on my way to a guy that works out of his house on Harleys part time.  Guy tells him no way is it the tranny. Proceeds and pulls primary finds the nylon chain tensioner chewed to pieces and they're jammed in the chain making it impossible for it to move.  Removed the clutch, compensator and stator cleaned all the crap out of everything and put in a new $4.50 part and adjusted tensioner. Bike is fixed. Now this was a Sunday afternoon, the guy asks is $100.00 to much?  Don't know what the dealer would charge but it would be way north of $100.

Very cheap fix.  Man I hate selling a bike then it has a problem.

That was definitely a deal, Chains!  Hey, I never worry about chit happening to a Bike after I sell it.  I'm always straight up about the life it's had.  I keep 'em serviced, and fix what breaks, but I tell the buyer I've showed it no mercy.  I ran the chit out of it.  Chit wears out.  That's the reasoning behind mass production, right?  8) See ya' in MV!  Later--HUBBARD

I agree, just so happens the friend also worked for me running my plant floor for 11 years so there is a little tighter bond than normal.  I am tickled it wasn't the tranny.
