Ride to Mackinac anf the U.P. of Michigan
« on: August 24, 2015, 08:31:47 AM »

We rode from Grand Rapids, MI to Petoskey which became home base.  Rode M119 to experience the Tunnel of Trees, then rode over the Mackinac Bridge the explored some of the U.P. of MI.  Tahquamenon Falls State Park was our lunch destination.

Pick of both bikes.  My friend Pat rode his Ducati Diavel.  I could ride all day long.  He needed more frequent breaks.  We switched bikes for a while.  He's now shopping for a Street Glide.

I was born and raised in MI but have never seen the Mackinac Bridge in person.  It was awesome to see it and ride over it.  One lane is solid pavement and the other is grated.  About 1/2 way through we moved into the grated lane to peek at the water below.

Destination Tahquamenon Falls.  There's an upper and lower fall.  We only stopped at the upper area

I was raised in MI, but left in 1981 when I graduated High School.

I have be across the bridge many times as a child and many more as an Adult, five times on my Bike.  I have had to ride the grated lane every time due to work on pavement.

I love riding the UP.  I also love the Tunnel of Trees, and always do lunch at Leggs Inn at the north end of it in Cross MI.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is awesome, and has a good micro brewery.

I also love Pictured Rocks.

The UP is a nice way to escape the heat of TN in the Summer.

Love the UP not a fan of riding over the grate.  I have done it but prefer the pavement. Also like the lake Charlevoix area too. Some great wooden boat shows in the up.

I was born at the hospital in St. Ignace.  My dad was stationed at Kinross AF base back then, but I don't think there's a base there any more.  Haven't been back up that way since high school.  That bridge is a trip, ain't it?
Thanks for posting the pics.  Nice to be there in the summer on a bike, but any other time of year...forget it!
