Head gasket
« on: October 19, 2015, 07:33:45 PM »

Local Indy is trying to talk me out of using .030 Cometic. Wants me to use the MoCo's stock .045. His reasoning is they do not seal properly on the 4" bore engines. I know the FACTORY had problems they tried to solve with the gaskets, and was under the impression that the liners actually would move in the bores. He is a former HD dealer wrench. This doesn't sound right to me. ???

I've used .030 Cometic head gaskets on more than a few 4" bores with nothing but success.   Just use the Cometic torqueing procedure (which differs from the MOCO torqueing procedure).   And actually, I think the current MOCO .045 head gasket is made by Cometic - someone can correct me if they believe otherwise.

I have never known of any Cometic head gaskets to have a sealing problem, regardless of bore size.

Plenty of 4.125, 4.060 bore engines out there running cometic gaskets with the same stud pattern as the 4 inch.

I've used Cometic .030 hg's on 3 113's thus far, worked great. Cyco (Fort Gratiot, Mi.) make good gaskets as well.

Or the tech could be trying to cover his arse. A lot of people fire up and immediately romp on it. Might get away with it on a stocker with cast pistons, but throw forged pistons and tight hg's in and these morons will be sniveling about piston noise.

Piston slap........the words sound real aggressive and authoritative when mentioned, but most that use it wouldn't know a piston noise from a Lionel train going around in a circle......
