HEY!  You Garmin Owners!
« on: January 18, 2007, 09:22:17 AM »

I was over at my buddy's house helping him mount one of the new H-D detachable windshields where the mounting hardware stays with the windshield and not the scooter.  After looking at the mounting hardware, a BIG light bulb went off in my head.  The fork tubes were 1.55" in diameter and my Carlini bars are 1.50"

I ordered one of the H-D mounting clamps (p/n 58174-04) then took a bolt and using JB Weld, attached it to the Garmin bracket.  The nicest part of this installation, when I get to my destination, one flip of the clamp's lever and I can take it with me. Take a look at how it came out!

(Note: Although the clamp is high gloss chrome, the pictures do not do it justice!)  This setup works with 1.5" bars, I think that with a little ingenuity (add some rubber spacers) it could work for you too.

Great thinking [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Looks like a very useable solution.  Have you riden much with it yet?

Like the look of the bars too.

Buffy, what part got JB Welded where?

Is that threaded bolt/rod/whatever part of the clamp to begin with and, if so, could it be unscrewed from the bracket?  If it could then one of those ball mounts for a RAM mount could be threaded in in its place.

Also, on a 1.5" handlebar do you think the clamp would allow for any kind of insulator to be installed to avoid the metal on metal contact that might eventually mar the chrome on the handlebars?

Hey TL,

The only part that was JB welded is the actual plastic mount from Garmin (see pics below)

Pic 1 untouched mount

Pic 2 - bolt JB welded into the "socket"

and "YES", the bolt unscrews from the clamp mount, but I just didn't trust the ball mount to hold on the GPS on a hard bump.  I have ridden about 300 miles with it so far and it works better than I thought.  I love the fact that in 1 second, I can release the whole unit and take it in a restaurant with me.

Oh yeah, one more thing, the whole clamp is ubber lined so no metal to metal contact is ever made,  In fact, H-D has a part number (Gasket 58791-04) so you can replace the rubber when it starts to wear.  I LOVE my Carlinin bars, so I don't want them to get scratched.  (My first design included wrapping a piece of a bicycle tube, but after I treid it a few times, found out that the built in gaskets work just fine)

Thanks Buffy.  This looks too slick not to try.  I've got a set of the WildOne bars so the diameter all but matches up.  It's not that the unit doesn't come on and off quickly with the big thumbscrew on the clamp, but it does leave the bolted on ball mount behind on the handlebars.  The whole thing just gets easier and cleaner with the setup you've got here.  Thanks very much.
