Help/advice needed for remote unlock on 15 FLTRUSE
« on: June 12, 2015, 03:11:40 PM »

I'm having trouble with locking/unlocking with the key fob. The range is so short as in almost no range at all. I have to have the fob in front of fairing on left side. dealer did the best they can and called HDMC to get help. Their response, that's the way some are and it's normal. Anyone have advise on a solution that might have worked for you?

Sounds like some more H-D BS.  For the system to be worth anything, it needs to work like any other fob system.  If your auto manufacturer told you it was necessary to hold your fob near the windshield at the bottom left corner in order to unlock your car, would you accept that kind of answer?  And I really love the statement about "that's the way SOME are".  If only SOME are that way, then that means it isn't normal.  And of course more importantly, it ISN'T ACCEPTABLE.  If only some are that way, that means there is a way to make it like the others that aren't that way.

You need to buck this up the ladder at H-D and don't accept the standard blow-off responses.  I'm guessing there is an issue with the antenna and receiver, possibly something as simple as how it's mounted and if it's shielded by some other part.  Or the transmitter and receiver just aren't strong enough.  If I had one to play around with I might try extending the antenna, but that isn't something you should have to do.  Make Harley fix it.

I was having the same issue. Could never figure it out. But in doing new bars I had to take the ignition switch off. There is a wire that runs from under/inside that ignition switch to your battery, allowing your fob to work. My wire was all twisted and cut up. Also, the washer/nut assembly under the ignition switch was loose. Tightened it down and replaced the wire and it is much better. Still not as good as it should be in my opinion, but much better than it was before

To take off your ignition switch there is a tiny tab/button under the switch on the right side. Push that tab in with your finger and then with your key in the ignition switch turn the key to your left towards the unlocked position and the switch will lift off. At least that was the process for my '11... not sure if it's the same for a '15. But you tube is great for this

I'm in the same boat as you with my '15 FLTRUSE. The auto locks work when they want too, usually not from the same fob position.  My '11 FLTRUSE  auto locks worked perfectly.
I brought this up to my service provider and he said he never heard of such a thing two months ago and for me to stay on top of it. LOL

Sounds like another top notch service provider.  I hope you aren't planning to wait for him to call you up and say he's finally got a fix for you.

If you guys want a fix, you're going to have to contact H-D, not just the dealers, and bug them until they first admit there's a problem, then finally spend a little time to figure out the cause and the fix.  Never assume they are "working on it".  Since the system is basically the same as what is on other models, I'm still guessing it has something to do with how the receiver and antenna are mounted on the  RG.  A fix could be as simple as changing the orientation or routing of an antenna, or a more involved fix like having to move the receiver to another location.  No one will know until H-D takes it seriously and does some diagnosis.

Same issue with mine, when I picked mine up new fron the dealer the lock would work sometimes. Dealer ordered receiver/transmitter will replace at 1000 mi service. Hopefully this will correct the problem.

 :coolblue: woa.
I had issue after I collected bike 2015 RG Ultra CVO in March.
Intially when starting from cold, the bike did not recognise the auto unlock enabler, kept asking for manual code.
No issue when engine was hot !. Dealer could not advise.
However, I DID find the fault.....Battery not fully charged by dealer prior to bike delivery !!!!
works ok once I had it charged up.

Then, the Lock FOB did not work, able to lock / unlock using manual switches. Same with both FOBs, changed batteries, same problem.
I then tried to re programme and pair the FOBs as per the good book. (not easy). this failed.
so left it for dealer to sort on service.
It is now fixed, engineer stated he had to re pair the FOBs. (same as I tried to do). It took him 3 attempts before it worked.

You guys may have simular issues and they just need re pairing.

Mine is the same on my 2015 FLTRUSE--I have to be standing next to the bike on either side to make the fob operate the locks. Both fobs are the same and I changed batteries on both, even though they are both about 6 months old. I'll try the re pairing and see if it is any better. Thanks.

Just saw this thread. My '15 FLTRUSE has extremely limited range with the fobs as well. My previous 2011 FLTRUSE was fine. Unless my hand with fob is directly over the tank I can neither lock nor unlock the bike. Definitely not right. I mentioned it to my local HD service advisor and he said he'd look into the issue. Haven't yet heard back from him and I'm not holding my breath.

I bought my bike in June of this year.  I noticed right away that the lock and unlock function seemed to be intermittent and when it worked it only did so at short range, like within a couple of feet of the bike.  It seemed to get worse with time, within after around 2 months of using the fobs.  I changed out the batteries on the unlock fob and the regular fob, and immediately got more like what I would call "normal" range out of it.  Now it will unlock the bike from as far as 3-5 feet away and in most directions from the bike.  I still would consider this marginal performance (at best), but unless it worsens, I'm going to leave it alone for now.
I realize that what some of you are describing is likely a different problem than I had, and I certainly agree with Jerry about running it up the flagpole to the MoCo and not leaving it in the hands of your dealer.  From what some of you are saying about the level of lack of support from your dealers, I think that is reprehensible and totally unacceptable and should also be reported to the MoCo...for what good it will do.

Mine's weird. Sometimes it works from 20'  away, most of the time it's from the 4-6' range. Seems as though the longer I hold the button, the better it works.
