Do 2011 and newer 110 engines run quieter?
« on: December 28, 2015, 12:52:57 AM »

Happy Holidays!! I was in my local HD dealer today just browsing. One of the salesman asked me how I liked my 09 SEUC. I said it was great except for the valve train clatter I hear around 3K rpm. His reply was that HD had cured that by 2011 and the motors now run quiet without excessive valve train clatter. I didn't ask him, but I am wondering if that is true, and if so what did HD do to make the engines more quiet since I think the 110 motors still have a 255 cam? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance CAHDBIKER

The newer models still have the HD 255 cam but the lifters have changed since 2009.  If you search here, I think you'll find references to the newer, "C" lifters.  My '15 top end is certainly quieter than my '09 was.   Hope this helps until the real motor heads join in.

Greg is correct on the changes to the lifters but honestly, I can't tell a difference from the mechanical noise from my '12 to this new '15.  If anything, I believe it's a bit noisier/busier on the '15 than from my '12....not bad but I noticed a difference.  Yes, my '15 is stock exhaust wise so the motor sounds would be more audible.

I believe that salesman was just doing what so many salesmen do, blow smoke up the rear end of potential customers.  The mechanical noise level of the engines was a big issue early in the history of the 110 not just due to valve train issues, but also piston slap and other sloppy stuff.  Some were quieter than others back then, and I assume the same holds true today.  I still see complaints from some on the later models about engine noise, and I've assumed that many others have just accepted the fact they are noisy and don't complain about it as much as before.

NO difference in noise between my '09 & 15. NO difference, I recently ran into the new owner of my '09 and they were both idling as we prepared to leave, NO difference. Salesman was just trying to sell you a bunch of salesman speak.

An unfortunately large percentage of later model Twin Can engines have developed, over time, the ability to run significantly quieter.  In fact silently.  This is followed by the repair bill.
