Harley Starters Replace or Rebuild?
« on: December 02, 2015, 02:30:42 PM »

My Starter Solenoid hung and Stuck again not releasing the solenoid plunger.  The copper contacts arc ad stick time to time.
3rd time in 10 years. I replaced the plunger and contacts each time.
This time it wouldn't disengage and my starter got very hot.
Being in the middle of nowhere I decided to ride it home before it killed Tha battery like last time. No cell service where I was. Too far to push in the hills and I was not going to leave it!
The Harley Hitachi electric motors are very good.  How do I know if I am buying a good one? Some are too cheaply priced so are probably crap, others  are Dam expensive.
If I get just the starter motors any Recommendations?
If get the whole replacement any Reommendations?

Have only replaced 2, both times I used a Ultima Thunder Fire that I got from fleabay. Both were still cranking when the scooters left my possession.

Are you sure that is a Hitachi starter motor?

OEM harley starters are manufactured at Denso in Maryville TN.  I know for a fact from 2001 on, as that is when I went to work for Denso.

I am mistaken. Was not Hitachi.  Must be a Flashback from my
Shovelhead days that I grew up with. My llocal shop told me to get
Spyke or All Balls, he claims they are really the same company that shares parts and are a very good quality.  Anybody know any Negatives on these manufacturers?
Thanks

Is there anyone nearby who can do a total rebuild? I have an 2002 Heritage Springer with some motor work, I see you have an S&S 111, nice. My stock 1.2K starter crapped out and I was able to purchase a rebuilt 1.4K which gave me a little more TQ to turn the motor over and its holding up great. It was under $200 with a core swap. I have no info to offer on those aftermarket starters.

Well most online sites tell me the Spyke starters will work on FXR4 but not the FXR4?  I have not gotten any responses yet. Besides
All Balls I am considering Terry Components 1.4kw Starter.

I had a Spyke starter a few years back on my 100" Evo, wasn't impressed, lasted a year and a half. Tech starters have a good rep on big motors, or replace with a Harley.

A Harley high torque starter lived for 10 years with a 95" high compression motor on my Heritage even though I hardly ever used the compression releases because they were manual. Mostly because I forgot. :-[

Personally I would keep searching for the best starter out there and rebuild yours if the cost is not to much.  That way you would have a new starter and a spare replacement for little money giving you piece of mind if anything happens to the new one.  I would send a PM to one of the great builders we have on this site that have much more experience than what I would give.  I have 88,000 miles on my 08 and I'm on my second so I may need the same info you receive.  Please let us know which one you purchased.

Good Luck

The Tech Tornado starters are costly. 425 on their Sale price. I looked at Spyke and called them. I needed a Starter with the Battery post in the 2 OClock position. They would have to build it. Their Stealth Model were correct but price was too high, I wanted the older style. Their older style had the battery terminal straight up Noon position that is too close to my oil tank.
Terry Components, was having a Sale so I got the Chrome 1.4kw Starter for 300. I am Satisfied with that.. Two years down the Road will I be Happy? I hope So! The stock HD starter  was 15 yrs. old and 60k miles was with the S&S V111 motor.
