Are Lithium Batteries Worth the Price?
« on: February 08, 2016, 06:27:32 AM »

Saw a lithium battery at the dealership yesterday. Are they noticeably better than regular batteries for cranking power. Wondering before I buy one if they're really worth the price.

I guess it depends on your priorities.  Here's an interesting pitch for Twin Power’s Lithium Ion battery: https://shar.es/14sRWZ

I would check the warranty compared to the stock battery. If it is no better that tells you something.

Unless you were trying to save a little weight, I wouldn't do it. You also need a special trickle charger.

I put a Antigravity LI battery in almost a year ago and it has been terrific. Bike starts like a Asian bike every time when I barely touch the starter and I have a 124 motor. I know most here will disagree with me and say they are not worth the money and I have read all the terrible stories but for me I have loved it and would never go without one going forward. I do use the trickle LI charger

I have a Deltran with 480 CCA. Walmart has it for just over 200.
I bought one.  I am happy with it.

Given all of the press lately on Lithium batteries on hover boards, phones and tablets catching fire I would stay away from them.  Especially if from China.

Given all of the press lately on Lithium batteries on hover boards, phones and tablets catching fire I would stay away from them.  Especially if from China.

Unfortunately most if not all of the LiFeO4 batteries being advertised to the motorcycle market seem to be using cells made in China, inserted into the outer casing either there or here, and the potential customer will be hard pressed to know if he's getting legitimate high quality parts, or cheap Chinese crap with all the shortcuts those folks are famous for.  The most important part is the controller circuitry built into the battery that regulates and limits charge and discharge rates.  Fires result from runaway cells that proper controllers would prevent.

The advice that was given to the hoverboard customers was to look at the actual batteries and make sure they came from a legitimate recognized name brand.  I chuckled when I saw that information on various "news" shows.  I guess they don't understand that the crooks in China also do a very nice job of counterfeiting product labels, not just the product itself.

Well, I guess I can answer my own question. Bought a Twin Power lithium battery from my dealer. Took the bike home and started it...tried to anyway....five days later. Grunt/pause, Grunt/pause, Grunt/pause, Grunt/pause. Shut down bike and wait 30 seconds. Grunt/start. I took it directly to the dealership and swapped it for a regular battery plus a $100 gift card for the difference. The shop manager told me he had the same problem with his the day before. Never again.
