Transmission Oil
« on: September 25, 2004, 07:42:33 PM »

What is everyone using in there transmissions? I was going to change mine to Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic gear lube. Has anyone tried this and what results have you had? On Mobils site they don't recommend it if motor oil is specified.
Thanks     [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I'm using Amsoil 75w90.  I was running Syn3 in all three holes but my trans seemed to shift "sloppy" (for lack of a better technical term).  After reading all the debate in this and another Harley forum I switched to Amsoil in the trans, and then put Amsoil 10w40 in the primary and Amsoil 20w50 in the engine.  I agree with most others in that Syn3 is a compromise and may work OK in the trans but I don't want my trans to die at 30K when it might have gone much longer with proper lubrication.  It shifts much better now with the gear lube.

Motor oil is fine for motors.  The transmission has gears, so I prefer to use gear lube.

I had them same complaint of sloppy shifting with syn3 in the gearbox. I changed it out to Belray Gear Saver (Hypoid Gear Oil SAE 85w-140), at the suggestion of the lead mech at the local H-D shop.  Eliminated the sloppy shifting and seemed to quiet the tranny down right away.  Also changed the engine oil from syn3 to Mobil 1 (20w50). Still running syn3 in the primary but I plan to switch back to the H-D primary lube soon.

8K miles on the '03 SERK, no problems, and running great!!!!

I too use Bel Ray in both bikes. It's the best I've found. I use Mobil 1 in the engine and primary.

Switched from Syn3 (Uhggggg [smiley=annoyed.gif]-clunky, hard to shift, metal on the drain plug, hard to find neutral, etc.) to Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof.  Life is now good in tranny land.  Redline is great stuff!!!

I also use the bel ray gear lube, quieter than the synth 3 and shifts a little easier!!! [smiley=laugh.gif]

I've used Redline in all 3 holes for about 4 years and am very happy with it. Noticable difference from the MoCo stuff. I wonder though, do any of these aftermarket fluids void our warranties? I never had to go to the carpet on it, but have often wondered.
