2004 SEEG Fork Oil amount/level
« on: March 17, 2016, 12:19:09 PM »

OK - so I have my entire SEEG torn apart doing powder coating. I am finally ready to start the assembly process! Happy days!

BUT! I cannot find on this site or e-net anywhere that says HOW much oil to put into each fork. I've seen 314ML, 10.4 oz, 5" from the top, 4" from the top and probably a few other suggestions.

I realize this is a rider preference issue but I want to have a BASE LINE for assembly.

Starting with a dry system, pour 11.1 ounces (328 ml) of Type E fluid into both legs.  Then with the fork compressed, measure and adjust the level to 5.24" (133 mm) from the top of each tube.

That is from the Harley shop manual.  I might add to slowly stroke each leg a few times to distribute the oil and eliminate any air pockets before doing the measurement.  There are special tools you can use to adjust the height that just suck out any excess until you reach the preset dimension.

Hey GR  - the 11.1 is for 04 SEEG correct? The supplement I have for it says 10.6

Is that wet? and 11.1 is dry?

The spec I gave you is from the regular Touring shop manual (my CVO supplement doesn't have anything in it for the front forks).  If you plan to use the height specification to check and adjust each leg, versus just pour in X amount, it won't matter if you pour in a bit too much and then suck some back out.

The SEEG forks are lower (shorter) than the stock forks referenced in the Touring manual.  That might explain the difference??

Not sure - The guy that does work for me an others from time to time says 11.1 or 5.24" as well BUT he got that from the regular touring manual.
My 04 SEEG supplement says 10.6 oz, I just can't get a "for sure" on if that is WET or DRY. I winder if I could Call or write HD?

So I called HD Service. They gave me the exact same rhetoric as my local dealer did and my shop guy. Put 11.1 oz in it and call it good. NO ONE can answer me if the 10.6oz that is listed in the actual 2004 FLHTCSE Sup is for dry or wet. So I guess I will go with 11oz and if it's too stiff I'll take a little out and if its too soft I'll add a little in.

You're making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be.  One half ounce of fluid won't make a noticeable difference to the operation of the forks.  Since you are starting out with a totally dry system, as opposed to just a drain and refill without disassembling the tubes, I would definitely go with the 11 ounces and then measure both legs to make sure they are the same height.  Trust me, I used 11 ounces and had no problems.

By the way, if you're trying to change the damping (stiff or soft), you would do that with different viscosities of fluid, not a half ounce change in quantity.  Many of us did go with a slightly more viscous fluid, such as 20 weight, to firm up the front end a bit.

From my experience you won't notice much if any difference between 15 and 20, but I would avoid going over 20.  It's a very unsophisticated damper system compared to modern cartridge style dampers, and too heavy an oil introduces harshness with no real benefit IMHO.
