Polaris is to move production of its 'Slingshot'
« on: March 31, 2016, 04:57:00 PM »

Polaris is to move production of its 'Slingshot' three-wheeler to its new Huntsville, Alabama factory when it is completed later this year, leaving their 400,000 sq ft Spirit Lake, Iowa plant entirely dedicated to production of Victory and Indian motorcycles. With some 1,000 employees, Spirit Lake is expected to see motorcycle production "level-off" at around 900 units a week once the transition is complete. The plant originally produced personal watercraft when it opened in 1994.

I watched a video on YouTube of that Slingshot.  I don't think I'd ever buy one unless I lived in a retirement community like Green Valley, AZ, where everyone drives around in golf carts on the city streets, or someplace like that.
If I get too old for two wheels, I'll either get a trike or drive my Audi cabrio around.
The slingshot looks like fun, and $20k to start off is surprisingly low.  If Harley built one, they'd charge twice that.
Makes you wonder what Victory's doing differently?  Also makes me wonder how long before Indian or Victory comes out with a trike?

Did they move their lawnmower production facility also?

I borrowed a buddies slingshot for a weekend and it was different. It's a giant go cart. I felt it was a cross between a convertible and a motorcycle. I don't think I'd purchase one though. Size wise it is longer than my vette.

I've seen one on I-17 in Arizona climbing it's way up from Camp Verde to Flagstaff. It was moving along quite nice. Not as fast as my motorcycle but it did fine against my FJ cruiser. The two in the seats seemed to be having fun.

Saw one on the highway coming into Knoxville Tennessee running around 80 mph in heavy traffic. It looked like it would be very hard to see it as it sat so low. I would not have wanted to be in it at those speeds on the highway in heavy traffic.

Here in Virginia it is considered a "car" because of the steering wheel.  I need to find out why the owners wear helmets, personal preference or requirement.

In PA it is considered a MC. Right on the vehicle frame it says MC. My understanding is that as a MC it doesn't need to meet the car guidelines, rules etc.

There was huge booth display of the slingshot at Dayton Bike Week.  They seem cool but IMOP side-by-side seating isn't a bike.

They were letting them into the bike parking lot and because of their width...had  problems navigating through the rows.

Time will tell if this style of ride will past the test of time.
