harley fly wheels

are the newer hd fly wheels better now  than in 2010, on the 110 motors, so up grading to a 117 , would not be an issue?

I have been told the 110 Bottom-End will not withstand over 110 HP, for an extended period of time.  That information was based on my riding style, and the experience of my builder.  Some will disagree, and that's their perogative.  There are always exceptions to every rule.  I've very seldom experienced the exception in my quest for HP.  They will all come apart at some point in time, especially if you put them to the test every time you ride.  ALL of them. I've modified every Motor I've ever owned, from the Pan Head on, and the best Motor I've ever had was a Zipper's 120, Twin-Cam.  It lasted 22,000 miles.  It failed as a result of an imploding lifter, at about 6200R's.  Destroyed.  So, I sunk another pile of money in it, and fixed it.  I now have a 124, that barely has 1000 miles on it.  I hope to put some miles on it in the near future, absent this frickin' rain.  When it blows, it blows.  Ante up!  Good Luck!  Later--HUBBARD

A guy who tunes in Illinois, Jim Kennedy, also races his '07 bagger. Probably has several hundred passes, burnouts at the drag strip on a stock lower. Like I say about lifters, flywheels, bearings etc., etc. they are a crapshoot. Bolting in a 117" kit is not instantly going make the lower end fail. Dropping the clutch at 3000rpm daily could. A hard downshift, absolutely. For the average guy, winding out through the gears, it likely could outlast these yet proven drop in rings/cylinders/pistons. Bottom line, if one wants to go fast it's going to cost$$. Either up front with a worked lower end, or S&S, or later, when there is a failure.

To invest that much into the motor, it's silly not do the bottom end.

I'm glad I did.

HD has not changed anything with the flywheels, so I don't know why they would be any better or worse.
I changed out mine for an S&S. Bike runs so much smoother.
IMO, if your going to keep the bike for any length of time it is worth the cost.

If there is any improvement it is most likely due to improvements in the assembly process and not a design change.  If there have been any design changes, I've not heard anything about them.

The first year of the "new" style primary saw a ridiculous amount of crankshaft (flywheel assembly) failures right out of the box.  We seem to hear less and less about major failures as time goes by, but that doesn't mean the quality is good relative to other products.  They still have excessive runout that leads to accelerated wear of parts, and the press fit design is still subject to slippage (scissoring).  So it's just a matter of degree, and of course the luck of the draw.  If it were me, I wouldn't sink thousands into the top end without first addressing the bottom end.  You don't build a ten million dollar mansion on a thousand dollar foundation.

I agree, even better use S&S crank. I did. Nice ´n´smooth ride. 124" build is done. Lot of labour after work, but it was worth of it
