No Metzeler front tire for our Breakout
« on: August 27, 2013, 12:16:21 PM »

Hi there

On the rear wheel I have a Metzeler ME 880 Marathon XXL 240/40 R 18, since I was hoping, that there will be a front tire 130/60B21 63H out soon. Since I'll need a front replacement quite soon, I called Metzeler in Germany.
The call agent told me, that there will not be a 130/60B21 tire available within this year and that they do not know, if there will be one in future at all.

Just for those, who are interested in Metzeler tire on (CVO) Breakout...

To bad. - In this case, I'll change to an other brand next time.

Cheers!

I have Metzeler's front and rear, but you just have to step down to the 120/70-21 and it wasn't that big a deal to me!

Or you can go for Metzeler ME 880 Marathon Front 140 70 21 TL 76V

[/quote] I wonder how the ride would be with either of these two front tire size options?  What I'm wondering too is whether or not the Metzeler 260 will fit in the rear without modifications.  I think some of the Rocker guys have done this.

I think 140 width will only adds 5mm on each side. The 70 ratio might look better because the tyre is taller and will be closer to the fender (makes the fender look better). The back tyre 260 will add 10 mm to each side, so if there is a gap of 10mm each side of the rear swing arm then it will be ok.

The 240 is as wide as you can go on our bikes due to the wider drive belt......... or mine would be sporting a 260!

The swing arm, yes, but as I stated above, there isn't even 5mm of clearance from the drive belt.

Have a look at this website: www.thunderbike.de/de/  a black Breakout Fitted with Metzeler 260. As you can see from the specification, only the back fender has been changed with regards to the tyre size. Maybe you can contact them to see whether you can fit the 260

Personal preference, I guess......I don't like a big front tire and honestly I can't tell the difference from stock.

Actually the Breakout can go to 260 without any modifications. I know several who have done this and I will be doing my switch to 260 in a few months.

why did you not go for the 140 70 21?

Just to show you guys through some basic math that the 120 wide front tire is closer to the standard 130 tire (opposed to the 140 wide tire):

Tire           Width       height     diameter       height         Circumference
Standard    130             60            21           27,14"        85,27"
New 1        120            70            21           27,61"        86,75"
New 2        140            70            21           28,72"        90,22"

                                                         120        140
Difference height  standard - New:           1.20%    4.00%
Difference Circumference standard - New: 1.48"      4.95"
Percentage difference standard - New:     1.71%    5.48%

So even though you'd think that the difference is just 10mm wider or smaller, it has a pretty big impact on the total wheel/tire sizes. I know the speedo is feeded information from the rear tire, so these differences won't really appear, but just for arguments' sake, here's the difference in milage your speedo would show if the front wheel would feed the speedo:

                           Standard   120      140
Difference in miles   35           35,6    37,03
                           50           50,9    52,90
                           60           61,0     63,48
                           80           81,4     84,64
                           100         101,7  105,80

I see a lot of talk about Metzeler lack of a 130/60R 21 for the CVO Breakout. then I see talk about changing to a 120 or 140/70-21. The Metzeler ME 880 240/40R18 is a  Belted Radial and the ME880 MARATHON XXL 140/70-21 FRONT TIRE is a Bias. Bad Bad to mix tire construction types on one bike! Stick with one or the other, best being to stay with the construction type that came on the bike new!
