Oil Blow By?
« on: July 23, 2016, 11:13:21 AM »

I'm getting excessive oil blow by coming out of the air cleaner spraying on the bike. I put this Agitatator cleaner on so I could ride with lowers on in the winter but may need to go back with the OEM if I can't figure this out. Oil level is not abnormally high. This started happening minimally after my dealer had to replace my roller lifters after one failed. Thoughts?

Depending on your relationship with your dealer I would go to them first and tell them what you just said.
That failing if it was me I would get into whatever the dealer did when you noticed this oil spray.

I have a riding buddy with a stock '14 street glide with a "dealer installed stage 1 kit and download" that sprays oil and pings like crazy.
Told him the same thing.
When I get back in town, we'll do some more checking on his bike.

Did they go into the engine, or just replace the lifters?  Usually a lifter roller failure leads to damage to other parts, so it's never wise to just replace the destroyed lifter and send the customer on his way.

Let's make sure I understand the situation.  The air cleaner was changed some time prior to the lifter failure, and you didn't notice oil blowing back onto the bike.  Now the only change is that the lifter failed and the dealer worked on the bike, and you have oil blowing back on the side of the bike.  How many miles did you have with the new air cleaner before the lifter failure?  The reason I ask is that it would take some time for oil from the breathers to build up enough to saturate the filter and start dripping or blowing back.

If this started after your lifter failure, I would suspect your oil pump had some particles go thru it, which has opened up the clearances, making it pump less efficient (particularly on the scavenge side...).  If this is the cause of your blow-by, the only cure for this is to replace the oil pump.

Another thing to check, if you have access to the tools, is to do a leak down check and a compression check.  This will tell if you (among other things) if you scored your cylinders/rings, again, causing blow-by.

It doesn't take much shrapnel from a lifter failure to cause other problems...

A cheaper possibility is a bad or poorly-installed umbrella breather valve in one of the heads.

Thanks, for replying guys. New air cleaner was installed and I ran a few thousand miles with it. With no oil blow by. After one of the roller lifters failed, they replaced all all of those and the oil pan as the particles where lingering in there and that pan had a riveted baffle in it that they couldn't take apart and were being cautious about particles. The oil pump was also replace with a pump that generates "better pressure" which I'm finding out is a little too much.  I'm running about 45-50 on the gauge when moving. I have a good dealership and probably won't have too much flack if I bring it back to them.

Do you know what oil pump they installed?  The amount of oil pressure is generally controlled by the oil pressure relief valve in the camplate...
