Whats missing in these pictures?
« on: July 28, 2016, 10:33:37 PM »

My excuse is that it's hot and I'm tired. I've had this apart for about a week. I finally got the tires mounted and putting things back together tonight. Putting the front wheel back on I ran into this. Now, I have done this many times through the years but never on this bike. I've looked in the shop manual and the CVO supplement but I can't resolve the gap that you see between the chrome spacer and the wheel. It's not rocket science but I don't believe this gap is supposed to be there. Please, someone enlighten me.

Looked at some pictures on the interweb and it looks like there is supposed to be a gap that big? Didn't remember it being that wide!!

There is no large gap as you're showing in that first pic if all is installed correctly.  Not that much to install though. Spacers on both sides of the wheel and the ABS sensor on ABS equipped bikes.

I'm just holding it up in the first picture to show the shoulder inside that contacts the bearing. I just didn't remember there being such a gap between the spacer and the wheel hub. Its a wonder all kinds of crap doesn't end up between the spacer and the sealed bearing. I guess I need to leave all that to the engineers.
Thanks a bunch for the reply. I'll put her together tonight.

I might be to late for this but if you put a small dab of grease on the inner coller than let it contact the bearing, pull it away and see if the grease transfered.

That's on the other side and the gap is not quite as big.

That's exactly what I have. You just saved me a trip to the dealership to look!
I'm getting bad at second guessing myself.
Thanks!

Think of it this way.  The collar of the spacer contacts the inner race of the bearing, which contacts the axle.  The axle, the inner bearing race, and the spacer are all stationary and do not rotate with the wheel hub.  If you didn't have that space between the hub and spacer, the wheel wouldn't rotate. You might think they could have left a much smaller gap, but considering Harley's tolerances and lack of precision on other parts, it's probably best they made the gap that size and not smaller.
