Oil Pan Question Please
« on: October 04, 2016, 11:18:02 PM »

2006 CVO Ultra. Silver 103 motor.

Some of the threads on my oil pan are stripped. I've stopped the leaking with some teflon tape on the plug. Next oil change I plan on changing out the pan.

Is it worth upgrading to the larger pan? Has anyone installed the larger pan and can you tell the difference? I know it adds one more quart of oil, but does it help with cooling? Can you go longer between oil changes? What are the benefits if any? Is it harder to install? Do you lose any ground clearance with the larger size and capacity? Will it work with my EZ-UP Center Stand?

If anyone has an Silver OEM available let me know.

Thanks

The sources of the heat nor the size of any installed coolers change with the larger pan Mark.  So the best you can hope for in an oil temp change is that it takes just a little longer to reach whatever is max temp for the ambient circumstances of your riding day.  Of course once that larger volume of oil does reach it's normal temp relative to operating conditions it will also take that larger volume a little longer to cool down as well.

As for change cycles; you really think that in practice you're going to choose to extend out beyond 5000 or so because you're carrying slightly more volume?  Having said all that if you ask it the other way; "does an extra quart hurt anything?" the answer is obviously "no."  That's often all the excuse we need to spend money on our bikes  ::) .

If it were me I'd stick with the stock pan, assuming you can find one.  The extra quart of oil won't improve the oil temperature situation much if any, as Twolane mentioned, and it could negatively affect your center stand.

The original part number for the silver pan was  62490-99, and a quick search for that number on a couple Harley dealership sites came up with no current pricing or inventory.  That usually means Harley no longer supplies that part number.  You could try ebay.   Or you could have the threads in your current oil pan repaired.  Which threads are stripped, the oil drain plug, the trans drain plug, or ?

Get a TIMESERT, and keep your pan.

The threads on the steel plug are fine. The first 3-4 threads in the drain hole in the aluminium pan are stripped. The rest of the ones all the way back in are fine. With teflon tape I was able to get some torque on it and stop the leaking.

My thought is, if I have to pull the pan to repair it with a time-sert or helicoil, I might was well change the pan. That's why I posted here looking for a pan. I figured someone here might have upgraded to the larger one, and might have an OEM one laying around.

In any event it won't be for another 6-8 thousand miles.

That Part number did come up on Ronnie's OEM parts finder and has a list price of 278.99 so you may get lucky and find one at a dealer.

Found one!

A rider in upstate New York had one off his '05 SE ElectraGlide. Same SE 103 Engine in Silver. Can't beat the price of $60.

you might want to put a late model pan on and late model pipe on there, that would possibly move some heat down and under a bit  :nixweiss:

The -99 pan was superceded by the new pan when the exhausts started routing under.  Not surprised the -99 part number is all, or all but, gone.  They are interchangeable parts when using the old exhaust and required if going with newer pipes.

I'd rather keep my EZ-UP Center Stand and pass on the cross under pipe.

I don't think it is good to use Teflon tape. :nixweiss:

I like the bigger pans.  I still only run 4-4.5 quarts but like the air volume it also brings to the table.  Always been alone for this argument though.
