2016 CVO intermittent lifter oil supply problem????
« on: November 25, 2016, 10:31:28 AM »

I'm on my second 2016 CVO that occasionally the lifter noise gets very load. Not ticking but clacking. Harley took the first 2106 back after 1500 miles because it was so bad out of the box. The second one was nice new but 1500 miles later I have the same issues only not as severe. If I do a 15 second 5000 rpm easy throttle sometimes it will quiet back down. The bike when cold is usually quiet but when it warms up you can here ticking at certain RPM. When this intermittent thing happens it goes from ticking to clacking. I put a upgrade oil spring and plunger to pick up oil pressure which is 15 idle  and 35 at 2100 but it didn't help. It is like something covers the oil capillaries leading to the lifter journals or something like that. Anyone with ideas?

Insufficient oil pressure at the lifters is a known problem.

How are you measuring the oil pressure--the stock gauge, or by installing a mechanical gauge at the oil pressure sender?  I ask b/c the stock gauge is not accurate, and actual pressure might be very different.

It could be something simple, like crappy lifters.  Harley has had a lot of crappy lifter problems since they cheapened the old "B" lifters several years back.  Even the special high capacity SE lifter they used in 2013 to present CVO110's had the crappy internals that allow for excessive leakdown and slow pump up.  Find a competent tech if you can and have him try to narrow down which lifter(s) is making the noise.  If it's all the lifters equally, then I'd suspect an oil delivery problem.  If it's just one or even two lifters, odds are it's just another bad batch of cheap lifters.

As for measured oil pressure, if those are accurate numbers (see Para Bellum's post) it still doesn't tell you if oil is reaching the lifters in sufficient volume.  It's hard to believe you would get two engines in a row with severely restricted oil flow to the lifters, but with H-D I would never say never.

I did find a competent local guy since my post and the process of understanding the how and what is in side the 110 was very eye opening. What I found is that the oil routing system has lots of tributaries to supply and flow from the cheap oil pump into the bad lifters trying to keep the aggressive ramp in the cam profiles quiet is near impossible. Pressure helps but I already did the oil spring change with no success so it looks like I need to replace oil pump ,lifters and cam shafts with non harley parts while using adjustable pushrods to keep it sounding and operating like it really should. Its very bad news to have to pay to make Harley's premium product operate the way it should. thanks for your responses.

I dont think the OEM oil pump is an issue. Your oil pressure is normal. Id switch out the lifters to some S&S lifters and see if thats cures the problem.
Whereabouts in Ontario are you from?

LOL, I was going to out right ask as well, but I figured he would mention the name in his next post. I am curious, even though I'm in the west end and dont' need their services as I just had engine work done.

Has anyone checked your factory pushrods for slag and or clear path for the oil?   Not saying its not the lifters, or the oil pressure, but its the something to consider.

no the pushrods have not been checked but the bike only has 2000 miles. The first bike they took back did this as well. At first I thought it may be a gasket issue overlap in the system but after looking at a Harley motor motor stripped down it really looks like it is a comedy of design flaws. I think oil flow, pressure, poorly toleranced components and the inevitable heat expansion of the motor components all adds up to sloppy noise operation. Who knows maybe since the introduction of the new motors they went out and grabbed all the out of tolerance parts to finish off the last of the 2016's. I am just kidding, but I wish they would put a bit more effort into the motor on such a premium product. It is so embarrassing coming into a coffee hangout with bikes everywhere and mine is clacking like an old 63 Chevy with 300000 miles
