Battery pack for storing a CVO
« on: February 16, 2017, 11:00:18 AM »

I'm looking to leave a bike in Florida sometimes for two or three months at a time. I looked at many storage places and none of them had a 120 volt receptacle for a battery tender. Anyone out there with a suggestion?  I'm wondering if there is some type of battery pack that I can charge previously then leave it with my bike while in storage.  I'd appreciate  if someone could let me know how to do this?

Thanks

If you cannot find a power source, how about simply disconnecting the battery?

Or you might consider removing battery and charge at home when stored? (might slow a thief down some that way but of course would kill any alarm system your bike has.)

Nick .......is it your goal to keep the battery conditioned or to keep the security system armed? Otherwise I agree with Greg .........either disconnect the battery or better yet; remove the battery and find someplace with a 120v outlet for your trickle charger.

How about a solar trickle charger?   Many are available

I guess you would have to hope that storage unit has a sky light for it to work?  :huepfenlol2:

That wouldn't make for a very secure storage unit.   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:

Thanks everyone for your speedy responses!  Ideally what I'd like to do is just get off the bike and plug in some sort of battery retainer.  I really don't want to go through removing the battery and or disconnecting it.  However please excuse my naivety but how would you disconnect the battery? When you do that on a 17 CVO Ultra isn't the alarm tied into it? It is a secured storage facility so I'm not worried about the alarm system being off, I just want to know whenever I get back to Florida the bike starts with not problem.  HELP!!!!

You don't have to physically remove the battery from the bike, all you have to do is remove the negative cable from the battery.  And yes, before you do that you need to have your fob nearby and turn the ignition on (those two things are what turn off the security system), then remove the negative cable and turn the ignition off.  Without the draw of the bike, modern AGM batteries have a very low self-discharge rate.  There should be no problem letting the disconnected battery sit for many months.

There are ways to install a switch that can be used to isolate the battery so it isn't necessary to even remove the cables.  I can't say I've ever seen someone do that on a bike, but I have seen it done on cars back in the day.

In the storage unit, is there an overhead light?  If so, is it a screw in bulb?  If so, unscrew the bulb and screw in a 2-prong outlet and hang your cord from the light.  Just leave the light switch on when you lock up.

But if it's got no light, or one that's not able to be tapped into, I guess like others have said, disconnect the battery, take it with you etc.

Good luck.

Another thought would be checking out a local bike shop and see what they would charge for storage compared to a self storage unit. I realize you could only get your bike during their working hours vs. 24-7 at a storage facility but maybe they would allow you to keep your battery charged?

Can I ask where in FL? I live on west coast near Tarpon Springs. I renovated my kitchen three years ago and since I only have a 1 car garage and needed to store new cabinets in there before I could install them, I rented a storage unit and it did have an outlet. I stored mine in a Public Storage (that is their name) and all units had a single outlet. Maybe you should check around because I can attest that outlets are common in many storage ubits.
