Radio Swap -- Learned Something Interesting
« on: June 30, 2017, 12:15:18 PM »

Guy I know just a little here locally called last night seeking insight.  Has an 04 Electra Glide that's regularly ridden and serves duty as regular transportation.  He likes stuff to work but it doesn't have to be fancy.

His radio died.  He likes listening to tunes back and forth to work.  Didn't want to spend big bucks for an aftermarket or newer HK radio.  Somewhere scored an older radio from like a 98 or 99 model as a freebie.  His first look made it look like a direct bolt in.  So he did.  Then the bike wouldn't start.  That's when he called me.

We collectively thought about it for five minutes or so then I told him to cut the AVC wire.  Vroom, bike starts  ;D .

It occurred to me that on the old radios the serial data line might be grounded.  Sure enough.

So if anyone is swapping radios for some reason there's one to keep in your back pocket.  AVC can be made to work taking newer radios to older bikes (some hoops to jump through sometimes) but taking the older pre-serial bus radios to the newer bikes has this little problem.
