Vibration in 07 CUSE
« on: March 04, 2007, 11:53:07 PM »

I have 5k on my BLK/ORG CUSE and she really smoothed out after about 4000 miles. There is still a rough spot at about 2700-2800 but it is better than when new. I did find that the Syn3 would drop about 1/2 quart during 3000 miles. If the oil falls any at all below the high mark when hot, the vibration and noise is much more. I wonder if the dipstick is marked properly. She is broke in good now and ready for the RH True Duals, PCIII, and SE HiFlow AC, and the famous tuning link. Hopefully that will let it breathe better and cool it down.

In and of itself don't be concerned with an engine that seems happy running a half quart low.  That fill mark does not regulate with military precision and no two engines seem happy at quite the same spot.  My own will very quickly go to a half quart low if filled beyond that.  Then it'll stay there until about 4000-4500 miles in to the oil change when it'll get another half quart to get it to 5k.

The vibration/whatever-it-is issue is more of question though.  Do I understand the description correctly?  It only vibrates when it's a bit low on oil?

Welcome aboard Bonehead! Glad you found us. That's great to hear that you didn't have any problems with it being stock that long! How bad were the heat issues? When you do these mods, you'll have a new bike again. Look around the various threads. There's a lot of great info and people here! Enjoy the site! Hoist! 8)

Bonehead,
Welcome aboard,  Great looking bike.
I too have a different vibration or something at around 2500-2900 RPM and have had
it since the start.  Nothing too crazy that concerns me but I have noticed a decrease when
I went to Mobil1 VTwin oil.
Like Hoist said, once you get those mods on the bike, you will think you just picked it up from the
Dealer.  That will be a great day for you!
Have Fun,

TimBone

Bonehead,
Welcome to the site...glad you signed up.  :)  I don't notice the vibration you're talking about with mine.  The only issue I have is that aggrivating transmission whine in 5th gear around that RPM area.  Only happens in 5th.  I've been lead to believe, that changing over to Mobil 1 or Amsoil will lessen that.  So it's Mobil 1 at the 5000k service.  I also heard that there may be a Tech Bulletin out about not using Syn3 in the tranny...but no one has been able to verify that other than a couple of members have said that their dealers mentioned it.

I would start by geting rid of that crappy Syn3 and put some good oil in it, either Amsoil or Mobil1.  Doing that alone may get rid of the vibration.

Welcome Bonehead and like Ernie said, get that crappy syn3 out and problems may go away. It will run cooler and should not use any oil with the mobil1 or amzoil.

The sooner you can get your pipes and air cleaner swap the better. You will think you have a new bike all over again. Goodluck and glad you could join us :2vrolijk_21:

It is my understanding that substituting Syn3 for the heavier Formula Plus lube will quiet the 5th gear operation. I have not seen or heard of anything published from H-D that specifically addresses changing out the lube.

I see that some folks on this board recommend using heavy gear / hypoid lubes. I would advise caution and careful consideration before using the real heavy stuff. The issue here is proper lubrication of the needle bearings used extensively throughout these transmissions. This becomes more of an issue in the cooler ambient temps.
