You need an honest 10.5:1 to get that cam to work right. Now you are going to be closer to 9.9. Pistons are typically .006 ish down. The reliefs in the pistons need to be checked, a larger intake will hit radially

I run that set up but at 10:1. 130 ft lbs and 120hp.
Super touring set up. 40+mpg on highway, twist throttle and over 100mph on a pass in seconds...

I also had the cam in a 95 years ago and agree it needed 10.5:1 but at 117 it has all the power you need below 3k rpm.  95 inch motors and 117 react different to this cam. I went cross country this year and last on this build with good rideability and no problems in desert heat or mountain cold mornings...

compression is squeeze in simpliest terms. too little and power is down, to much and bad things start happening. Lots of opinions on it but touring can handle 9:1 to 10.5:1... I have run just about everything in-between touring. More squeeze more power in general.

The added exhaust duration plus early exhaust open helps relieve the heat so 10.5 is reasonable and more palatable when the squish is corrected. In other words zero deck the pistons and use a .030 head gasket.
If an S&S crank is used, I would, then get the full compliment rod tops. Be aware however that the Mahle pistons in the kit will need the bosses widened to accommodate the rod tops.

Now I’m installing  s&s cam plate and oil pump, S&S tensioners and install the lower cam sprocket and inner cam bearings. Anything else I should look at while in cam chest? Is 594 to much of a cam for this build or is the 585 the way to go?
