Photo Radar in Illinois
« on: March 30, 2007, 10:06:43 AM »

If you live in, or will be passing through Illinois, see the article below.

It's always good to be careful of highway construction workers anyway but Illinois will be enforcing construction speed zones with cameras beginning this summer.

Read on....

Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July. Second
offense tickets are $1,000 with license suspension. Beginning in July the
State of Illinois will use speed cameras in areas designated as "Work
Zones" on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a
$375.00 tic ket for the FIRST offense, but he SECOND offense will cost
$1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension. Drivers will also receive
demerit points against their license, which allows insurance companies to
raise their rates. This represents the harshest penalty structure yet
for a city or state useing PHOTO enforcements. The State will begin with
TWO camera vans issuing tickets in work zones with speed limits lowered to
45 MPH. Photographs of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken.

Pass this on to everyone you know !!!!

I don't like photo enforcement for any violation. Period. I do know that traffic doesn't slow down and needs too. I spend more time on the other side of the barrels than most and am here to tell ya that people are just stupid in work zones. Speed is a huge factor in the crashes. In this state the highway patrol devotes minimal time to enforcement in work zones and drivers know it. I applaud Ill's efforts but think they're going about it all wrong w/ the cameras. There is nothing, repeat nothing more effective in "calming" traffic than a cruiser w/ a radar cop pointing that device at you.

I agree, there was recently a radar sting set up with a work crew on the Interstate here, more so to catch speeders in general than just in work zones.

Here's the set up, they had a big John Deere tractor working in the median with a cruier in ont he far side of it to radar oncoming traffic.

They stopped a lot of cars and clocked them at speeds up to 90 mph.

Protect the Highway Workers, post signs to move over or cone off the lane as well, but photo radar will mostly enrage the public.

While working a night construction project in downtown Portland, Oregon with a patrol cars on site he still aveaged 4-7 people a night.  People just won't slow down in work zones, they've never been the one out there or they would respect the posted limit.  :soapbox:
