Inner Fairing Trim
« on: February 13, 2014, 03:04:53 AM »

I'm replacing the 3 black pieces of black trim that go on the of the inner fairing before the outer fairing is put on.   What is the best way to do this?  Do I want to try to superglue it on there?   I cleaned off all of the old goo after pulling old black strips off. What now?

Trim adhesive made by 3M. Should be available at local auto parts store. Comes in a tube similar to toothpaste and works good for that application.

If replacing with stock new black plastic pieces. Doesn't it come new with the glue inside the strips?

Do yerself a favor and buy some door edge guard at the local auto parts. It comes in rolls, mine had enough to do three bikes with some left over. While I used black it also comes in chrome color. And of course it's much less dollars than the OEM trim.

I was always wondering if some one used the door trim stuff.

How does it look, can you tell any difference? I too was thinking about using door trim.

The replacement pieces come with adhesive inside them.  Superglue there would be a bad idea.  Hard, brittle, it would squish out of the inside of the molding on to the paint during any attempt at install.  The adhesive inside the new gasket is actually pretty good.  Those pieces will shift over time.  Especially if you have the fairing on and off with any regularity.  Dealing with those soft gaskets is just part of the process.

I've put the door edge guards on a couple of bikes in place of the original pieces also.  It has done ok.  It comes in different sizes so if you go that way be sure you get something with the correct inside width.  Also expect a bit of a wrinkle or curl in the outer appearance where it has to turn sharper than it's made for.  Heat it a bit with a heat gun prior to initial install to help there.

Thanks for the tips.  I already bought the new trim pieces, not too expensive, six or seven dollars each.  I didn't realize the trim had adhesive in it.  Heat gun is also a good tip to promote flexion in trim piece.

For either E Glide or Road Glide those pieces are cheap enough not to worry much about.  So if you're the type that does have the fairing on and off with some regularity it's not a big deal to clean the residue from the old ones and stick on new ones every couple of years if you need to.

while OEM trim price is insignificant my trim seemed to always require attention. I searched for an option and found a company that markets trim for this specific application, guess what it was. I purchased an 18’ roll at pep boys for $13. I have installed it on three bikes and still have some left. I like the product, it looks good and stays in place.  Just an alternative for others to use. Took a photo but photo sux. :drink:

Yep, did the same and hasn't moved in years. Also did the edge of my lowers from top to bottom to avoid chipping or scuffing them. My lowers are black so the trim blended right in and has saved the edge numerous of times.

When you say "from top to..." do you mean from below the glove boxes downward?  If from higher than that, how?  Got pics?

Thanks,

Not as inexpensive as bulk trim but is RG specific and works great. xcycletrim
