Tire size question
« on: April 25, 2007, 09:35:50 AM »

I am looking to purchase the Metzler ME880 Marathon's on my 06' CUSE before my Dunlops are worn out and I want to make sure I get the correct size. My best guess is that I should order: Front 130/90HB-16 and Rear 140/90HB-16 , hoping that someone has done this and can agree with this size choice or educate me otherwise. Thanks in advance for any and all feedback  8)

Yes, you have the correct sizes. That's what I have on mine.

Be careful about putting a 150 on the back. It should fit but the load rating for the Metz 150 is quite a bit lower than the stock Dunlop. The load rating for the 140 Metz is OK.

Hey Geroge! I sent you a PM awhile ago :) Check your Messages and your Profile setting you have to turn it own again after we upgraded!

The Metz tire size are correct. I put a 150 (140 is Correct) on the rear and it rubbed my belt (frayed) on the 01 ultra. You should be able to check with an Indy Shop for the size check if you plan on ordering them on line.

I got 22K out of my Metz Front - The rear only lasted 11K so far the stock flops have held up better on the newer ultra by this time I had already changed the tires out. (Fr8trn) Had been using E-3's on his 06 ultra so you might want to try those the harley dealer so be able to order them.

Hope you are doing well and can make it to Hot Springs ( How's the old guy doing?):)

Thanks "coyotedat" & "VAZHOG", that's what I needed to know. I found the tires at http://www.americanmototire.com for $215.00 plus shipping - $25.20  Total of $240.20
I heard good things about this place so I'll buy from them in a couple months.

I will be at the Hot Springs rally with wife in tow. Haven't heard from (old guy) Joe in some time so can't say if he'll be there too.

I'll be in Mountain View, AR. in mid-May for an annual ride with a lot of Wisconsin biker friends, coning up soon! Can't wait to get away for awhile  :cucumber:

See you all soon enough,

George

My mileage is on par with what was posted.

Now I run 18's so I don't know if that plays a factor in mileage or not.

As for sizing your right on. I upped my rear tire to a 150 without fitment issues. I didn't have belt clearance issues.

Note min/max air pressure for both sizes of tires on stock fitment.  The column headers are off a bit to the left.  If riding two up, loaded, various things I've read recommend maximum pressure (cold) of 50psi for the rear tire.

Here it is specifically for the Ultra:

HARLEY-DAVIDSON
MODEL    YEAR    PREFFERED FRONT    PREFFERED REAR    FRONT    REAR    MIN/MAX    MIN/MAX
RIM    RIM    FRONT PSI    REAR PSI
FLHTCU Ultra Classic
Electra Glide 04-07 130/90-16 TL 67H ME880 140/90B16 77H TL ME880 3.00 3.00 38/42 44/50

Again, the headers are off because of the cut and paste...these are specific to our bikes...loaded pressure in front of 42 and rear of 50psi.  Read cold, of course.

Good info. Look at the load rating on the 140 vs 150 rear tire

1425800    140/90B16 TL 77H WW    R    3.50    2.75-3.75    146    665    908    44-50    130    8.0    17.20
1425900    150/80B16 TL 71H WW    R    3.00    3.00-4.00    153    646    761    40-42    130    8.0    17.86

The 150 is below the factory spec. It's not a good idea to use the 150 on the Ultra even though it will fit.

Agree...it's because of the sidewall height, from what the Metzler rep told me.  I wanted to go 18's on the rear when I changed wheels, but if you look at the load ratings of all the bias ply 18's they are in the same range as that 150.  On an Ultra, that would not do for me, so I stuck with the 16 inch 140/90...the Metz guy told me the heavy touring bike needs the sidewall height to help dissipate heat on the rear tire when loaded down.
