Removing Reflectors from Legs
« on: February 20, 2010, 06:04:54 PM »

I want to remove the orange reflectors off the chrome forks/legs.  Any secrets to removing them safely and still be able to remove the adhesive left behind without scratching chrome??

Your help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I believe the formula is heat it with a hair dryer and run some fishing line behind it. Clean up with goo gone or some other sticky stuff remover followed by a good chrome polish.

You can use a blow dryer, heatgun, propane torch, anything like these (but be careful with excessive heat).  After heating the relector up sufficiently, you can then pull it off (I usually get my finger behing a corner and gently pull), or use dental floss/fishing line with a sawing motion to remove it.  The residue left behing comes off easily if it's heated up also.  I have removed dozens of the reflectors this way and it never fails.  The key is just enough heat to soften the rubber adhesive backing.  Otherwise a paint prep or similar product will remove what's left.

I heated mine up a bit and it pulled off from one corner. Then goo gone on the residue that's left.

That's good for cleaning the bugs off the paint too!

I was going to suggest you set it outside on a good hot day and sometimes you can get the corners loose then use dental floss, but I saw you are in Wisconsin and I doubt if it will get very warm there soon.  Use a hair dryer and floss, finish with goo gone.

Heat Gun + WD40 works great for the front.  Patience and WD40 took the ones off the bags (you can use the heat gun on the saddlebags but don't over do it!!)
