New Orleans
« on: May 18, 2007, 06:57:50 PM »

Two of us just finished a 4300 mile loop that included Skyline drive,Blue Ridge Parkway,Dragons Tail,Wheels of Time Museum In Maggy Valley, Cherohala Skyway,Lynchberg Tnn.& Jack Daniels distillery,Natchez Trace, 3 nights in New Orleans,Rt 90 along the Gulf Coast to Mobile,Barbers Motor Sports Museum near Birningham,Cherohala again,300 miles of the Parkway again & home to near Rochester N.Y.
Highlites : Wheels of Time Is something I'll do every time I'm close to it.
No Katrina damage in the French Quarter but the residential areas won't recover in my life time.Gulf coast is rebuilding slowly.
Barbers is impressive with 730 motorcycles & art gallery like displays but
IMHO not as interesting as Wheels of Time with Dale the owner starting 50 - 100 year old bikes & doing burnouts in the museum.
North Carolina & Tennessee are full of roads just as twisty as the Dragon they just don't get the publicity.Cherohala Skyway is got to be in the top 5 I've ever ridden.Of coarse I took all the back roads I could.
In 15 days we needed our rain suites for about 10 mins. 1 day.

Glad the weather cooperated! Those are some great riding roads. Done most of them ( although unlike you not at one time!) Got any pix? john

That's the kind of ride I enjoy. And as to the lack of pics, I try to explain people that seeing a vacation through a viewfinder is a wasted vacation. Barry Manilow ( yeah I know king of scholck)  had a line in a song that went like

" got your picture in my wallet and some pictures in my mind. Pockets full of memories I never thought I'd find "

That's about the best way of explaining what a ride like this means to you when it's over

Thanks for the post

JUST one WORD    "AWESOME"   The only thing that would put the icing on the cake is about 100 to 200 of your CVO buddies their with you.
MV area is a beautiful place and area to ride, Brian (103) did an outstanding job last year putting that trip together for us and I hope that The Hot Springs Rally in Arkansas will hold up to that memory.......Hope to see you there in Sept.

That sounds like one hell of a road trip, pity about New Orleans, best city I ever visited - 2 mardis Gras.

What's the word on the street, are they gonna rebuild it?  I heard crime was down so they were still in discussions whether to rebuild the poorer black areas, the argument for is if you don't you lose the soul of the city.

Anyhow great story, any funny anecdotes from the journey.

Lot of people in New Orleans have just walked away from their homes for various reasons.Got jobs in other citys, were renting, got a pocket full of insurance money & relocated or can't see paying on a morage for a house they can't live in.People won't move back without stores & services & stores won't come back without people.Kind of like starting on the frontier.Lots of busnesses on the outskirts still not showing any signs of being rebuilt. All the news wanted to talk about was the 9th ward, but there's a lot of $300,000 &up homes that have been abandoned too.
Had a lot of fun with a young girl motel clerk in Lunchberg Tnn. that tried to give us a room with a king sized bed.Told her she had us wrong that we weren't that kind of guys.
Was a great trip.Have done a few & think 2 guys is the best number for anything more than an overnight.4s not bad but anything more turns into a clusterduck.Just MHO.

You missed an opportunity there - you should have pressed her to convert you to the "straight and narrow"  I bet you had a ball.
Thnks for the update and ride safe friend.

great ride report BAKRDS!  I'm due to ride the 'Trace' and get back down to the Gulf Coast also.  Are any of the Casinos back up and running in Biloxi?  That was always a good ride destination, but haven't been back (yet).  I'm bad for not taking the pics also.  Spiderman has it right about the mental images, it's just that some of them get foggy from time to time.  I'm sure ya'll kept a clear mind, though.  :drink: har!   :huepfenlol2:spyder

Don't know if all the casinos are back but there's enough of them so there's comatition between them. One casino by it's self is not good for the player. They can set any table limits & rules they want.Tables in Biloxi have some of the best rules for the player I've seen outside the locals places in Vagas.
Understand they just opened the Rt 90 bridge at Bay St.Louis.That town must have been hurt really bad going that long with that bridge.
Thanks for the kind words about my report, Jim

In reading your post, it appears you had a great time and I am familar with all of these areas.  Why wouldn't wa...Very nice!  Of course the next question is when can it happen again?

As is anything in life...a matter of time, money and options.
