ahog110SERk's other passion - Saltwater Fly Fishing
« on: May 21, 2007, 12:54:12 PM »

Here's one of the wee beasties that I caught while on my recent jolly in the Bahamas.

Barracuda 55 inches long and 39lb in weight - he was very annoyed when I hooked him and totally destroyed my lure leaving only the hooks.

That's one large Cuda.  I took my 7 piece fly rod up to the mountains this weekend and snagged a few trout.  First time i combined both passions. Had plenty of room for all the gear

Hi Al - the Permit is considered the Holy Grail of Saltwater Fly Fishing because there are not too many places where you can find them and because they have an acute sense of smell and very good eyesight. To catch one on a hand made fly is extremely difficult and many, many people have spent years trying to catch one with no success. We tie the flies to imitate Crabs, but they must be extremely accurate representations and then they must be presented to the Permit in such a way that they are fooled into taking them.

There are no Permit in the Meditterranean, thay are mainly found in certain parts of the Carribbean.

This is my second Permit, the first was caught in Mexico over six years ago.

Here ends the lesson in Permit fishing.

Great catch!!  The Permit is a nice one, and to say you've landed one is something not to be forgotten. :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

What weight rod did you use on the 'Cuda...had to be at least a 10...I've got an Old Orvis 8wt, but a Winston 7wt that's Boron in the lower section, so it's more like an 8wt.  Not enough for that beastie, but might work on the Permit/Bonefish.  Haven't had the opportunity to do Saltwater, but do love the freshwater I've had the chance to do.  I'm going to have to start throwing one of my 5 pieces onto the rack for some of these trips I take to the mountains.
