Re: 07's Idle Throttle Problem?

I've been having this intermittant problem with the idle on my bike. Seems like, after running hard 3-4k rpms for 15 minutes or so, I will come to a stop sign and pull in the clutch and the bike will idle to 0 and die. It starts right up afterwards though. I also had an instance where I let off the throttle to slow down and the rpm's stayed up and I continued to accelerate. I pulled in the clutch and stopped and the RPMs where at 3k for about 15 seconds, then slowly dropped back to 1k.

I called my dealer today to talk with them and they said they had another 07RK in for the same complaint. I haven't heard what they found yet.

Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks - Keith

In a normally functioning machine the idle speed is maintained by the Idle Air Control (IAC) and the ECM. The IAC is an electronically controlled valve which meters the airflow necessary to maintain an idle through a passage that bypasses the fully closed throttle plate.

An air leak with a carbureted machine often results in a fast idle. An air leak behind the throttle plate in a Delphi equipped machine will more than likely be compensated for by the IAC, unless it is very substantial. It is my sense that an air leak substantial enough to over ride the effects of the shut down IAC while resulting in an idle speed of 3,000 rpm would be an obnoxious, “in your face” kind of malfunction.

A loose IAC on the throttle body may result in erratic idle behavior.

An issue with the throttle control or cable may result in an erratic fast idle.

An engine temp sensor that malfunctions can cause idle and drivability issues. A hot engine operating in the warm-up mode will idle fast, and when first started will run very rich; this malfunction rarely throws a trouble code.

I can’t tell you for sure if it is possible for an intermittent connection to the IAC to not throw a trouble code. Now that I mention it, you didn’t say whether or not your engine light was indicating a trouble code. An IAC with an intermittent connection resulting from a possible wiring or connector issue would result in an idle speed that is all over the place. It is my sense that a trouble code would be indicated here.

A malfunctioning IAC could result in hard starting and an erratic idle. Historically, the IAC has been a reliable component.

If none of this works, I would fall back to a good solid chant with burning incense. :)

I'm not getting any codes set. It happened again last weekend. Was cruizing along and let of the throttle and the bike kept accelerating. We pulled into a parking lot and with the clutch pulled in, the bike was idling at 3k rpms. Waited and few minutes and it slowly dropped back down to 1k. Earlier that day I came up to a stop sign and it tried to die. I kept it from dying with the throttle and in a few seconds it took over and went back to 1k. This only started after the dealer did the top end work for the oil leaks. Not sure if it's related though.

You've got a two year warranty... Let them figure it out

Sounds good in theory. BUT, everytime the bike goes in there, it never comes out the same. Little muffs here, or a small scratch there. This dealership is better than most but it's always my goal to keep it in the shop as little as time as possible. Plus, since the bike doesn't act up on damand, they probably won't be able to see the problem. The dealer already had one bike in for similar issues so I need to see if they were able to resolve it and what the fix was.  :-X
