Remove forward controls on FXDSE
« on: April 23, 2007, 12:26:22 PM »

I'm seriously looking at a new FXDSE. My only concern right now is the forward controls. I'm not very tall, (trying NOT to say I'm short), and the forward controls may be a task. Is it possible to remove them and move the controls back to a more comfortable position.
 Thanks for any help.

Hi Smurfsdad,
Welcome, I looked at the Harley website and saw Dyna models with mid set controls so I imagine it could be done to remove the forward controls and replace with mid set controls. I don't know if you would have to change things like the exhaust though. You could also consider a different seat to bring you farther forward too.

Jacques,
I haven't officially bought the bike yet, that's why I didn't do the introduction or picture. I'm going back to the dealer tomorrow, (Tues), see how things work out with the forward controls and my less than "long" legs. If all works out where I buy the bike, I'll be back tomorrow night and introduce myself and the bike.

You've got a pretty good forum here,

I dont know if I would go as far back as mid controls on a Dyna. I have a mate with an 2003 Aniversary Wideglide & he is a bit short at one end also (not much over 5 ft). It was a real struggle for him to reach the forward controls & he was very uncomfortable when riding. I was able to pull the forward controls back about 2 inches & raise them about an inch with out too much trouble at all. It took me about 1/2 a day & a few bits & pieces I had lying around the shed. You cant tell its been modified but a few people (with wide glides) have noticed they sit back & up. My mate has never been happier or more comfortable & really enjoys his rides now.

Cheers

They are about 3/4" too forward for me as well.

Do you think these peg extenders would work?  http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=CEDEA274-8A4E-46DA-B378-C8817148BC82

They should be able to reposition the footpegs...

They probably would fit BUT I would not reccomend it as you may find it harder to reach the brake pedal & that could cause something nasty to happen! IT IS JUST NOT WORTH THE RISK!

I had the same problem, here's what I did. First change the chorome insert on the foot peg to the rubber version so your foot feels like it will stay on the peg (about $6 each). The chrome looks good but is not practicle to keep your foot in place or absorb vibration. Add the heel rest to the pegs for more comfort. Those 2 items are less than $100. but don't get you closer so then invest in a "close up seat". I have a Corbin seat on order, Before I bought the seat I was able to have it mounted on my bike at Myrtle Beach Bike Week for a test fit, moved me up 1-2". The stock seat is the worst thing to use if you have shorter legs. It is too flat and too long in the seating area so you slide backwards. I bought a used Street Bob seat to hold me over and it helped greatly, but still could be a little closer. With the Corbin you get to choose the seat materials, stitching, pattern, etc. for the same price. Mine will be 2 colors, 1 is aligator, and will have flame stiching in the seating area, will be custom to match the bike. I will post a picture when I get it, should be about 2 more weeks. I tried 2 different types of "set back" adapters with no luck because you still have to be able to reach the brake and the only type I could find also moved the peg further away from the center line of the bike while the brake peddle stays put. Changing the shifter and brake foot piece (not the lever) is also possible but I did not have to. I could find no company that sells a brake lever to move it back. A half decent machinest could do it for you though.

Kyarakan makes 2 different styles and both come in 2" and 4" versions. The "arm type" moves the pegs back but also too far out away from the center line of the bike. The "dog bone" style keeps the pegs closer to the orginal mounting position in relation to the center line of the bike. Remember though that the brake pedel is still in the same place. So yes you can change your foot placement when riding but you still have to be able to reach the brake. Replacing the chrome knurled insert on the pegs and brake give a better more positve feel. For me with a 30" inseam changing the seat and addind the heel supports made all the difference. Both Harley and Kyarakan make the heel supports and they look good too.

I've been following all your posts. Thanks very much for your help. My other bike is a Kawasaki 1600 Nomad. Great bike for riding all day with the wife. I have to admit that the FXDSE is a "snappy" little machine and a lot of fun to ride. It's a completely different bike and riding position. I think a lot of my problem is just getting used to the bike.

   Thanks again,

Smurfsdad,

You also have the option of installing floorboards like those used on the FL Softail line. While H-D does not advertse that you can do it, it is a direct bolt-on swap.  I did it.
