New oil pump, then cam plate
« on: June 04, 2007, 10:22:52 PM »

During scheduled maintenance, dealer mechanic said he didn't like my low oil pressure, so he replaced the oil pump under war...ty.  When I picked up the bike yesterday I didn't get to talk to the mechanic, and there was no charge, so I took the paperwork and left.  I notice that they also replaced the cam plate (3 hrs labor), and now I no longer hear the intermittent  'knock' that I was trying to ignore earlier.  Does that make sense?

Now I hear a different noise.... sort of like a bird chirp (big, fat, heavy bird), when accelerating, any gear, 2,900 - 3,000 rpm, most noticeable in 2nd and 3rd, after that there's too much wind noise. Below 2,800 the noise is NOT there. Definitely engine, not tranny.  Sounds like something rubbing, but it stops when coasting.  Loud enough to be really irritating.  Anyone have any ideas?

Difficult enough to diagnose noise when you can hear it... I've seen this forum do it from typed words. Amazing. :mango: (token mango)

Exhaust hitting or rubbing something? Maybe the brake pedal?

Do you have the stock cams? If so did they replace the tensioners as well?

Dude, easy enough to check the exhaust rub idea.  I have stock cams, repair order doesn't say anything but "replaced cam support plate".  I had specifically mentioned the tensioners;  check, replace if necessary.  Sure wish the mechanic would write something, anything, on the customer's copy... any comments... anything.

Would the tensioners make a squawk when accelerating only in a narrow rpm band ?

Thanks,

I wouldn't think the tensioners would make any noise unless they are shot. Then you would have metal to metal contact with the cam chain. I would find our specifically what was changed in there. I wouold hope they would have put new shoes in since they were in there. The have to remove and reinstall them on the new camplate anyway

Took it to the dealer today: Big bird noise is head gasket leaking.  Well, that makes sense.  >:(

So, dealer is going to rebuild both top ends, including rings, etc. under extended war...ty. :)  Then he said he thought my starter didn't sound good..."uh, grinding sound, yeah, that's it"...  replace that under warranty, with hi-torq (I'll pay the diff for chrome!). ;D  They're going to replace cruise control module, extended war..ty. ;D  Bigdog gave me his old SEEG radio and I installed it today, and it is WAY better than mine... told service writer I'd bring in my old one for war...ty repair...she said OK. ;D  A new front Detonator wheel will be here soon... war...ty.  ;D
Soon, I will have a whole new bike... extended war..ty! :orange:  :bananarock: :coolblue:

Funny how things work.  I have covered the cost of the extended war..ty, then some!

Thanks, d00d! Dealership is really taking care of me  :nervous: !  Only have 12,350 miles on it... funny, I had 76,000 on my '96 Road King, and had only normal little things wrong. Of course, I only paid $13,500 for it, so whadda ya expect.
New bling is good?   :zroflmao:   Sorry, I couldn't resist!  :mango:   :pumpkin: (wish the punkin smiley would dance!)
