In for the 1000 mile today
« on: June 28, 2007, 11:31:06 AM »

I dropped off my Springer for its 1000 mile today.  Two things I've asked them to look into: more valve train noise than I would like, and heavier than expected vibration when accelerating, esp. on heavy acceleration when I run the rpms up.  The valve train noise doesn't seem consistent - don't know what to make of that.  It's not very heavy (like clearance issues mentioned in other threads), just more than past experience.  The vibration bothers me, though, and I asked to have the pinion runout checked.

I'm actually pretty interested in this 1000 mile, not just because it's a CVO, but they actually schedule 4.5 hours for it and say they really go through the bike pretty comprehensively.  The price is good too - $125!!!  They're pretty reasonable on the 1000 mile anyway vs. other local dealers, and they give you a 50% coupon when you buy the bike.

Only one downer today.  I got stopped on the way for no helmet.  I don't know what I was thinking (obviously not much!).  I live in NH (no helmet state), the dealer is in NH, but I drive through a section of Mass to get there.  Fortunately, the cop was understanding, particularly as my wife was trailing me and happened to have my helmet in the car, and I got off with a warning.  I think I'll drop the chief a note as it really was an oversight and the cop did the right thing and was very professional.  Always appreciated, but rare on the bike!

bc;
Had my 1000 mile service done about 2 weeks ago. It only took a couple of hours. Charge listed on the service board was $231.00 for big twins. I ended up paying $83.00 for the synthetic oils and filter. I used a coupon that came with the new bike purchase for the labor charge.
I also mentioned the top end noise. The tech said it was normal amount. Said these 110s don't break in until 4000-5000 mile mark. Didn't solve my transiently erratic idle. Tightened up on the throttle cables. The dealer's "....digital tech..." was down/unavailable. Who knows if it would have helped. I'm supposed to return if it continues (which it has), but I'm not going to keep scheduling questionably effective time and keep running down there and then not have anything found. I'm getting closer and closer to just installing the TMAT ECM which I would hope would solve the problem. I'm already feeling like the warranty doesn't really translate into anything useful unless a part clearly fails. If checking your pinion run-out is somewhat involved, I'll be surprised if they actually check it. My dealer charged a friend of mine 1/2 hr. labor for the time he spent talking to the parts guys who were trying to sort out mounting an XM radio on his dresser's bars!! He bought his bike there too!
Keep us posted on what they do and find (if anything).

Would never have paid it.  Not in a million years.  No limits on the volume control to complain about that one while there in the store either.

You have got to be kidding? I think you need to knock some sense into your friend. If I had to pay for all the time spent talking with parts, I'd have used all my assets up years ago.

I can't say exactly what they did, but the bike runs smooth as glass.  The valve train noise is gone.  The vibration I reported traced to the rockers on the springer front-end, which were a bit loose, though they also looked at the motor mounts.  I wasn't convinced of the rockers explanation, but the vibration is also gone.

bc;
I forgot to mention that my bike did sound quieter FOR A WHILE immediately after the 1,000 mile service. Even seemed to shift smoother and quieter as well. I attributed it to the new lubricants as it's now ( another 400 miles or so ) back to the same level of valve train and tranny noise.
You know, I'm almost tempted to ask you who your dealer is and take my bike there to see if they can sort it out. My dealer enjoys a very positive reputation as having very good wrenches in their employ. I gotta wonder though, maybe the other dealers in my region are just sooo bad, that this dealer may just be mediocre and SEEM so great.
I'm curious if your valve train will get noisier again after several hundred miles on the fresh oils.

Whether you go into the hair dresser, the clothing store, the drug store, the gas station, the hardware store, your local vehicle selling store or the motorcycle store, all the gab is free.  In fact, they want to SELL you something, you want to know why you should be buying.   Takes words.  Now if you are a particularly slow person and are not getting it quickly, I can see that they may ask you to come back later, ask you to talk to someone else who may have more experience or time to talk to you, but talk to you for free has got to be the way.  Hourly charges come once agreed upon work begins, but not when you are still in the theory part of the negotiations.  I am shocked a dealer would pull that trick, and your  buddy should never have paid it, in my opinion, of course.

I had the same thought as to the noise, but then again, they found & fixed the vibration, so who knows?

The dealer is Mondadnock HD, just outside of Keene, NH.
