I got to looking over the left side cover this evening, and though I haven't tried yet, I'm wondering if I'm going to be able to remove the left side cover now that I have V&H Dresser Duals.  The rear header is awful close to the side cover...........so close that it looks like I might not be able to remove the left side cover without removing the heat shield, or worse yet, the header.  Does anyone know what I'm talking about?  Is there a better way to get the left side cover off with V&H Dresser duals installed?  Thanks.

Henry, this has come up in conversation before.  The advice and outcome have always revolved around loosening everything off, gaining all the wiggle room you can in the right direction, tightening it all back up.

On my own it looks close.  I've got more gap than some have had.  But I don't remember anyone whose actually not been able to do the install and then wasn't able to get the side cover on and off.

If I remember right I can't get my side cover off without touching the pipe in the process.  So I don't take it off when the pipe is hot.  But installed there's plenty of gap in between and it comes off plenty easy (when the pipe isn't hot).

Don,  Therein lies the quandry.  I didn't install them, and had I, I'd have checked that fitment challenge.  Anyway, looks like I'll figure this out later today.

Well I had the same problem with my Hooker true dual head pipes.

Every time I had to take the side cover off, I had to undo the rear hanger bolts and pull the whole thing away while fighting to get the cover off. That's why I got rid of it and went with a conversion kit. Those kits keep the OEM clearance and fittmant. Personally, my butt dyno cannot tell the difference between the Hooker, Rinehart, and conversion kit.

Mark, quite awhile back there was someone who had a heluva time with Hookers and clearance.  I don't remember anyone who couldn't get enough room with the V&H and the left side cover.  But there was at least one Hooker pipes user who just never got it.  So you aren't alone there.

Must be variations in how the V&H dual are installed. I installed the dresser duals myself a few days ago, and I now have MORE space between the left side cover and the exhaust pipe than with the OEM pipe! Just try to loosen and readjust the left side and you should gain the clearance you need.

Thanks Mike.  This begs the question:  Will I need to replace the exhaust port gasket on the rear cylinder?  Yeas, I know you said "loosen and readjust," but those gaskets are crush gaskets, and once crushed.......always crushed.  Before I do anything as far as adjustments, I'd like a concensus on this topic.  Exhaust leaks are something no one needs.  Thanks.

BTW, are you the same M&M mom & pop shop on the internet from whom I bought a tour pak organizer for my old Ultra back in August 2004?  If you are, you guys ROCK!!!!!  Thanks.

Nope Henry, I'm no relation to M&M Cycles. I've checked their website in the past, though, and they seem to be a good outfit.

With regards to the gaskets, I would order a couple of pair to have on hand. You never know when you might need them and one part number works for everything. Order through Zanotti's or wherever when you place your next parts order. In the meantime, you could try to loosen and readjust ... the gasket material is woven (Screamin' Eagle or James gaskets anyway) and SHOULD be able to reseal without leaks. If you end up with a slight leak - you have new gaskets on the way, right !!

I have no problems in removing it whenever I want to, Henry.  No need to touch the header or heatshield! Just take care when you are doing it.
