Fried Cluth

Fried the clutch on my 2007 FLHRSE3 at 1200 miles.  We were at a rally this past weekend riding around the rally stop and go, outside temp 94 degrees.  We had been riding around the campground for about an hour and I start feeling the clutch slip.  Shut the bike down thinking it was heat related,  tried riding it an hour later and clutch was gone.  Mechanic at HD felt like maybe I was slipping the clutch to much and caused the failure.  I have raced bikes since I was 14 and this is my 9th Harley and I have never had to replace a clutch.  The dealer was really cool and is going to replace the clutch and pressure plates.  I still wonder if there was something set up slightly wrong from the factory.

Bucky...glad to see you joined us after our conversation yesterday.  Have you ever owned a HD with the Hydraulic clutch?  Some people here have noticed an issue when the bike is new with the clutch engaging "too soon" off the handlebar.  It does engage a bit quicker when new, but after the plates get the high spots worn off, it's fine.  If you're used to a later engagement point with the lever, it'll take a bit of getting used to.  Once you do, you'll love it for the lack of maintenance.

Personally, I think you just got a bad clutch basket, or else the clutch was never completely disengaging due to air in the line.

Welcome to the site....after looking around a bit, go to the New Member thread and introduce yourself when you feel comfortable.  Great people here,  and LOTS of ways to spend your money, so keep those credit cards handy.... :2vrolijk_21:

I had to replace my clutch after 2000 miles. warranty. i use the bike for rodeo's. I had a Deuce and the clutch 12000. miles with lots of practice in the cones torque braking. i burnt up the clutch in 15 minutes on my first day of practice with the bike. Since there is no adjustment in the clutch and the high torque from the engine the dealer said not to use the bike for the rodeo even though that was one of the reasons I bought the SERK. On the cable clutch I could back off the adjusting nut an extra 1/2 turn to let the clutch slip but with the hydraulic  ti will not slip. So i use very little torque braking to control the bike at slow speeds. Billy
