Vibration sensitive Garmin 2610
« on: September 07, 2007, 02:59:11 AM »

Is it just me or just one of those unwanted Garmin features?  Seems my 2610 has a mind of its own and switches to various screens or prompts after a few bumps in the road.  Sometimes it will switch screens, or attempt to close a route etc.  Not always the same prompt or screen.  Anyone experience this problem?  Honest, I am not doing any off road riding!

My 2620 never behaved that way.

My 2610 has never done that, and it has been ridden hard and put up wet!  You probably should contact Garmin with your problem.  When you finally get them on the phone, you will find their customer service to be excellent.

I totally agree with the other posters that this is not standard. I've had the 2610 going on four years now and have never had anything like that happen.

For a hardware repair you need not even speak with a person if you're not so inclined.  Can go through their website and set up the whole thing.  Be forewarned though, it's a flat rate repair.

I recently had reason to look and for a 2620 the flat rate was about $250.  If the 2610 is the same they can be found on eBay sold as reman'd unit with a small warranty for less than that repair cost.

Any update on what you decided to do?

I must have jinxed myself because mine has just started to do the same thing. It acts as if the screen is being touched. When riding along, it will switch to the zom in/out screen and the white coursor appears on the screen as if I had touched it. You can't get it to go back to the previous screen, regardless of how many times you touch the 'ack arrow'.

$225 flat rate to repair it. I'll check out ebay for a reman'd unit. It's been a great unit for 3.5 years, but anything will go to pieces on a shaker table after awhile.

Update:

I just bought a brand new 2610 NIB for under $250 on ebay. Now I've got the old, slightly ailing 2610 for the truck and a new one, with full warranty for the bike. I felt this beats the $225 + shipping chanrged by Garmin to get my unit worked on. If my original one craps out totally, I can throw it away and still be ahead of the game with a new, not refurb'd unit.

Same story for repairs.  Had enough issues just getting the maps upgrade.  Decided to hold off.  On a trip to Seattle last week we flew in and rented a car.  No problems with the GPS so looks like just the infrequent "big bumps" on the cycle that result in the changing screens.  Still considering Zumo if the price comes down a little more.

How is the 2610 holding up on the motorcycle?

Does it have an internal speaker or does it need to be run through a vehicle radio to be heard?

Mike,

I got 4+ years and over 30,000 miles before I ever started having problems. The 2610 has proven itself as a very good motorcycle GPS. And, they're real cheap to boot right now.

Mike...you might want to take a look at the 2820...if you have a cig lighter power supply, it comes with a speaker on the cig lighter plug for use in the car.

What I'm looking for is a unit I can use on my Quad while out in the woods. I suppose I could use a weatherproof speaker however I'd rather not. I guess I'm after a true stand alone unit. My beater bike has nothing on it (not that I'd use navigation on it) so I was keeping it in mind also. As for my truck, what ever works on the others will work for the truck. My Bagger has the Pioneer so I'm good to go there. It gives directions over the music/movie so that is good to go.
