110 back fires when starting
« on: October 30, 2007, 06:37:05 AM »

I have a 07 seuc with just under 5000 miles on it. At 1000 miles I have the following work done,  Rinehart slipons, stage1 air cleaner, se race tuner and dyno tuned. The bike has run great. Lately I've noticed that when starting it hot or cold it back fires.I also noticed on decel it will pop through the exhaust.  It never use to do this.

I'm wondering if this is a fuel thing or time?

With the riding season about over I was going to wait till spring to take it in?

What's everyone think?

The first thing that I would check for is an exhaust leak.  Mine began doing the same thing...the mounting bracket had broken loose at the weld and caused a hole in the pipe up near the head on the rear cylinder, which causes it to suck in air on decel.  New pipe, no more leaks, no more popping/backfiring.

From what I've heard, it could be a timing issue.  -Too much advance.

I had the same thing with my 04 SEEG...cracked pipe...was popping, backfiring, motor was dying at inconvienent times - found a broken pipe - replaced it - problem solved...

Check your exhaust clamps.

I would also check for an intake leak as well as an exhaust leak.  While your doing it cyou may also want to heck your flanges to be sure they aren't cracked on the intake.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check my pipes for cracks and make sure they are not leaking at the jug. I'll also check my intake.

Yes Smiler this can be covered under warranty I'd think. I thought if it's simple I'll fix it myself rather than hassle with a shop. If something broken for sure I'll take it in. If it's just a missing clamp or small leak I'll fix it.

My reason I posted this was I figured and it still could be a larger issue than suggested. Just wanted to know if others have had this experience.  When it back fires it's like a gun going off. Get's your attention right now.  The last time I ran it, when starting it, it also had a load metallic or grinding noise when turning over. I stopped turning it over and tried it again and it started up and ran fine.

Bottom Line is if I can fix it I will, otherwise I'll take it to the shop in the spring.

Sadly, that's the way most of us feel and why we try to fix things ourselves instead of messing with our dealers even when warranty could take care of it.

Crunch,

The "backfire" is most likely an air leak, as the others have said.  However, the metallic grinding noise sounds like a starter or ring gear issue.  If that is the case, it doesn't go away by itself and it will get worse.

How is the best way to find an exhaust leak?  Mine makes a toh toh toh noise at idle when cold which sounds like an exhaust leak.  I have felt around the pipes, mufflers, and at cyl exhaust ports but can't find anything.  It is ever so slight a noise.  I have even held my hand over the RH muffler.   No backfire while underway.  Thanks.
