Aftermarket engines
« on: November 29, 2007, 01:57:14 PM »

Seriously wondering if best thing on my busted 110 would be to scrap it and go with a different engine?  If I beef it up with aftermarket cylinders, heads, pistons, cams, throttle body, etc, etc, I'll have several thou in it and have concern if need service away from the builder.  I'll have a conglomeration of parts and might have difficulty getting support.  One the other hand an aftermarket engine would offer proven performance and a source of support in case of service.

Considering the Jims 120".  Anyone have any experience with Jims engines?

Out of the box they do run well some run much better than others. Most of them that we see are making in the 118-123 hp range and tq in the 120 -128. Pipe and tune are a big deal as wel all know. I posted a dyno sheet on one that we did the heads on and added a cam. Pipes on that where not the best. They where a bassani pro street.   We sell a fair amount of the Jims 120 crate engines. Most guys have us swap the cam and added some compression before they install them. But like I said even in stock form they run well.

As I read & learn more realized that 120" probably not the best choice because 1) it utilizes the old style spring loaded cam chain tensioner and 2) it utilizes the pre-'07 oil pump.

The new hydraulic cam chain tensioner system and the new high-flow design oil pump are incorporated into the new Jims 131" which is due for shipment mid-December.  Hmmm, new design first-year production motor.  Whatever could go wrong with that?

Jerry, right now, your only choice is a Jims, or to rebuild yours completely, including the bottom end, as I'm doing now. There's nothing else available. Rebuilding mine was half the price as Jims and allowed me to keep my VIN in tact. ;)

Would worry so much about the vin you get an MSO with the new motor.    Nice thing about putting the Jim's in is you can do 2 things one put the 110 motor on the shelf and put it back in when you sell the bike keeping your Jim's or you can sell it to help offset the costs of your Jim's.
